That's in the wikihow too, isn't it? Contact the credit card company like she said and notify them of (potential) fraud at that address. Let them deal with it with your parents I guess if you don't have power of attorney.

Sounds like the desk cop heard you out at least. No need to be spiteful, you at least got to leave the station like 99.999% of the people who visited it this year without a knee on their neck.

The fraudster is eventually going to go to my parent's house to pick up the cards. I understand the house can't be watched 24/7 for the person to roll through and get the loot. Not even a vague interest in a actually catching the local person doing it?

I would never commit credit card fraud and identity theft but it is good to know the police don't care.

George Floyd is a law bar to clear. Why are you against the cops doing something?

Get it on video and maybe they'll be interested in mail theft, but apparently there are bigger problems.

Tell your parents to get a PO Box, or at the very least a locking mailbox that might be more trouble than its worth for crooks.

I mean it's a bit of a gray expectation, isn't it. Guess it depends on the load at the department and what they're focusing on at the time. Might be all over a package theft in a problem area, or just shrug and tell you to email amazon.

So it is good use of resources to put a cop to watch over a construction site but they can't investigate tens of thousands of dollars in credit card fraud?

I'm not sure I've ever seen you this vociferous about credit fraud. I suppose things change when it affects or threatens your family. Your parents could probably go through a credit bureau, maybe get their rating frozen for the duration of a fraud alert? Contact the FTC?* Talk to your lawyer or an accountant for other suggestions. I'm neither, and I do business on the other side of the country anyway. This is similar to advice you'll see on reddit, ex "don't look for solutions from random internet people, lawyer up."

* https://www.ftc.gov/about-ftc/contact

Maybe you could have called the non-emergency number with questions or sent an email rather than march into the station to chuck your evidence in their wastebasket (should also shred all mail you dispose of imo)?

Get a security system in place with cameras pointed at entryways, the porch, driveway, mailbox and hook it up to a NAS. Keep the evidence and report theft and mailbox tampering promptly. *shrug*

If it's part of an ongoing investigation, your local cops might be more interested? Ask for more funding and more cops, I guess. But wait, people (quite understandably) don't really want more violent American cops lurking around town. My, this is a bit of a problem, isn't it.

re: construction sites, it sucks but that's the way it goes I guess. don't think they get all the preferential treatment either, lots of stuff gets stolen that is never recovered. sometimes contractors will charge more to work in certain cities. pressure on just-hanging-in-there complex owners and small time tenants, starbucks certainly dgaf.

I am not that upset about the credit card fraud. It is just that they refuse to do anything about it. The cops can set up a sting to catch somebody selling a little bit of drugs but they can't do anything about somebody ripping off at least a dozen people. How many hundreds of hours will those people spend trying to fix their credit?

My parents have a home camera system. But it doesn't matter if the police don't want to do anything about it.

I dunno, there are more avenues than just going directly to your local police, already posted up there.

This is starting to remind me a bit of the comic book store tale. You complain about your students on the near daily, but a desk cop can't smile patronizingly at someone fixin' to be a Karen.

It is a Karen move to report credit card fraud? None of anything in your link is relevant to my situation. Except the part that says file a police report. I tried that.

Why should I need to go to wikiHow to deal with this situation? Why couldn't the police tell me what to do besides "just throw it away?"

I have the cops proof of tens of thousands of dollars in fraud and they told me to throw it away. Reminds me of all of those True Crime documentaries when the police refuse to fill missing persons reports or investigate sex crimes.

Definitely on the same level of sex crimes and missing persons.

You have a bad experience with one cop so you just slam your evidence into their trash and storm off with smoke coming out your ears. Kind of proving their expectations.

There's literally a link up there to a federal site with a fraud/scam report form, but whatever. Tell us again how the bad comic book clerk made you annoyed, or how I bullied you when I raised an eyebrow at your stories of fornicating with subordinates at work.

low end on the priority scale bad luck, not to mention your credit card company should cover it.

I am sure the identity theft victims feel like it is no big deal.

The link to the FTC is to report a crime against yourself. There isn't any crime against me. I tried to use that reporting site just now and it bounced me to a different credit reporting site to make a report there. I don't even think the website has an option for what is taking place.

I really shouldn't need to consult wikiHow and Google on what to do. I brought the evidence to the police, and got told to just throw it away. Why should I need to start an investigation myself?

@mac I think most (all) people here, dilbert included, want the police to have better, modern training, higher quality personnel, and generally escalate less with the public. Will that really be contested in 2022 bf2s? Even Hollis was sometimes critical of some of the stuff posted.

Notify the post office of a change in address. Have mail forwarded or held. You could probably have all this resolved today and then stop thinking about it.

Again it would be nice if the police told me to do something other than to just keep throwing them away.

Apparently I am the asshole in the situation.

If the police told you to jump off a bridge ...

Anyway USPIS.gov also refers to FTC and others for various. Google would have probably saved you the headache of having a Bad Time with the police. https://www.uspis.gov/report

Again I shouldn't have to go Google stuff to figure out what to do. It is not like I called 911 about this. I went to the police station with evidence of a crime and basically got told to just throw it away.

Again, I am the bad person here. If I ever see a crime I will Google, wikiHow, and Quora what to do before talking to the people whose job it is to deal with crime.

Or you could ask your lawyer or accountant like I suggested above (still maybe should), rather than put all your chips on a bored desk cop, ffs. The rest of all this was, soft suggest, other proactive, due dilligency stuff you could be doing.

Who's talking about muggings? smh

reminds me of another pair of news stories i saw today whose propinquity formed a sad contrast.

some 'smol business owner' trigger-happy vigilante with a handgun and a hardware store in florida or some other hothead state got 3 years for manslaughter. he (wrongfully) accused a mexican guy of trying to shoplift an axe or some other item. rather than calling the police, the guy fetched his gun and ended the guy's life.

in the same county you've got people doing 5+ years for possessing a personal amount of weed.

Mac, how many shootings and other violent crimes have we had this year alone? Stuff you're sarcastically referring to? Do you think it's possible that with decreased funding and perpetual staffing issues that the cops might have to prioritize ongoing or more important work than investigations of economic crime? Maybe the desk officer was encouraged to turn away comparatively unimportant workload.

I think you could handle an 120 student classroom. What do you think?
