Having scattered Israeli settlements in Palestine does not work. It can never work. What is needed are clear fixed borders to facilitate the establishment of a Palestinian state which can improve the quality of life for the people living there. Without that, this will continue exactly as it has done.
And I'm saying it won't be so easy to simply draw lines, shake hands and walk off. You'll have a state that can hardly economically sustain itself a la kosovo, which is pretty much a recipe for more disaster. Either Israel absorbs Palestine or gets forcibly contained / removed. Neither of which is our job to do.
If anything it's the UNs job. Vetoing resolutions designed to put more political pressure on Israel is counter productive, and unless I'm mistaken this is exactly what this thread is about. Without US support on the security council then more pressure would have been put on Israel over the years.

No one is talking about these changes being forcibly imposed by any foreign force, no one is talking about bombing Israel - just about keeping up the political pressure on them. Surely you can accept that one country routinely taking land from another and displacing the people who lived there is completely out of order and is something that deserves to be condemned on the international stage, so why are resolutions to condemn this behaviour, yet again, being vetoed?

You're saying it won't be so easy to draw lines, shake hands and walk off? Based on what? It's happened before perfectly successfully. If you think it's a case of Israel either absorbing Palestine or there not being a state of Israel, then you are delusional and have been completely taken in by the Zionist rhetoric designed to make people think exactly that.

I just love this headline.. "US Vetoes UN Resolution on Israel --But Agrees with its Substance‎"

The United States killed a UN Security Council resolution that would have declared Israeli settlements on Palestinian territories illegal by vetoing a draft resolution that reflected American sentiments.

The isolation of the United States, which did not want the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Security Council, was palpable. The 14 other council members voted in favor. And more than 100 countries, including some US allies in Europe and South America, signed up as co-sponsors of the measure (see full text of the draft resolution here).

However, the underlying questions -- the dispute over Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the stalled peace negotiations and the impact on Israel and Palestinians of uprisings against Middle East dictators were far from being resolved in Friday's uproar.

The American action is bound to be criticized by many in the Middle East and beyond. US Ambassador Susan Rice originally wanted a council statement (which does not carry the weight of a resolution) that American supporters of Israel roundly condemned.

In the meeting, Rice emphasized a council resolution would not move the parties closer to negotiations and "risks hardening the position of both sides." At the same time she rejected "in the strongest terms the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity." In a telephone conference with reporters later she said Washington opposed the word "illegal" in the draft resolution she called one-sided.

I really don't get what's stopping everyone from acting OUTSIDE of the UN then. The EU, for example, accounts for about 30% of Israel's exports and 50% of Israel's imports. It's ridiculous to assume that the US in itself could stop 90% of the world from imposing sanctions on Israel on their own accord. Why don't they?

Neither was I advocating bombing Israel. The most effective thing you could do is block trade.

As I said, Palestine won't be able to sustain itself. Their unemployment rate now is almost 30%, and that won't vanish if Israel goes back to '67 borders and builds a wall around itself. Who do you think the Palestinians are going to blame for their continued suffering, knowing that reverting borders will solve literally nothing for them? Palestine is almost completely landlocked and will be 100% dependant on Israel for economic gains.

Lastly, I feel that the UN would not put pressure on Israel (not noticeable pressure anyway). Know how they handled every single other ethnic group that wanted to be seperated from a country? They did fucking nothing, time and time again - and worst of all, it doesn't even get attention as compared to Israel/Palestine. Tens, if not hundreds of millions of people right now in the same or worse conditions than the Palestinians and nobody gives a shit about them.

Just read their statement on Ghadaffi bombing his own people;

UN Security Council statement:

The members of the Security Council expressed grave concern at the situation in Libya. They condemned the violence and use of force against civilians, deplored the repression against peaceful demonstrators, and expressed deep regret at the deaths of hundreds of civilians. They called for an immediate end to the violence and for steps to address the legitimate demands of the population, including through national dialogue.

The members of the Security Council called on the Government of Libya to meet its responsibility to protect its population. They called upon the Libyan authorities to act with restraint, to respect human rights and international humanitarian law, and to allow immediate access for international human rights monitors and humanitarian agencies.

The members of the Security Council called for international humanitarian assistance to the people of Libya and expressed concern at the reports of shortages of medical supplies to treat the wounded. They strongly urged the Libyan authorities to ensure the safe passage of humanitarian and medical supplies and humanitarian workers into the country.

The members of the Security Council underlined the need for the government of Libya to respect the freedom of peaceful assembly and of expression, including freedom of the press. They called for the immediate lifting of restrictions on all forms of the media.

The members of the Security Council stressed the importance of accountability. They underscored the need to hold to account those responsible for attacks, including by forces under their control, on civilians.

The members of the Security Council expressed deep concern about the safety of foreign nationals in Libya. They urged the Libyan authorities and all relevant parties to ensure the safety of all foreign nationals and facilitate the departure of those wishing to leave the country. The members of the Security Council will continue to follow the situation closely.

Incorrect, the Palestinians would be compromising by accepting the loss of half their country, and no doubt other sweeteners would be baked in such as Palestinian refugees losing the right of return to their homes in what is now Israel.
Also consider what would happen  if Israel and the Palestinians "compromised" and found peace. THe Palestinians would inherit another enemy, Islamic radicals and all nations that are not interested in compromise with Israel.
There are presently no nations uninterested in compromise with Israel - although this may change, and Islamic radicals are relatively trivial and would in any case be the problem of the Palestinians and not yours - even if you are right.
Let me guess, this is where you think the UN would intervene with a bombardment of lethal resolutions, right? The cold reality is, the only way there will be peace in the ME ( and I doubt even then) is with the destruction of Israel. and you can thank peace loving Islam for that.
Maybe planting their flag in a muslim country surrounded by other muslim countries was not a clever move? Not that Islam is much more violent than Judaism but we'll keep that to another thread.
By the way, do you really think Israel will be "annihilated" in any attack? What precedent would you use to form that opinion. In the event of another war, you would do well to put your money on Israel. THere is no political correctness for them in dealing with those that want to destroy it. The gloves and the politics will most definitely be left behind.
Dunno, WMDs are pretty hard to defend against, Iran and Pakistan have them at least, maybe others, mutual assured destruction still means they are destroyed.
While a small country like Israel would be vulnerable countries the size of Iran and Pakistan would be hard to destroy entirely.

If Israel were denied access to oil how do you think they would get on?

Could be done, but if it were done outside a UN mandate Israel would have a case through the WTO.
So the EU can't unilaterally do anything to Israel legally, and civilised nations don't bypass the UN just because they don't get the result they want.

Or maybe you're right, maybe the EU should give Israel 48 hours to leave Palestine before the bombing starts, take out the power stations, sewage works, Police stations, bridges, water treatment plants, airfields, mobile phone networks, then send in tanks and troops?

This is why we need a UN resolution condemning their actions in settlement building, then potentially a UN resolution establishing sanctions, then potentially a UN resolution authorising military force - as happened to Saddam when he annexed Kuwait and should happen to Israel for annexing Palestine. Until then Israel has no interest whatever in trying to achieve peace.

It all begins with a simple UN resolution, which the US consistently blocks.

1. are these the same Palestinians that launch attacks from territory already handed over by Israel? These are the compromisers of which you  speak?

2. It already is not my problem, I couldn't give a single flying fuck what happens to either of them. So so much for that point.

3. Ummm what Muslim country are we speaking of? WHen was Palestine declared a sovereign nation? When did I miss that?

4. Gunna have to tell ya, I doubt Israel will let it get to that level. They are great at pre-empive strikes and I am willing to bet will take care of the problem first. But of course then they will have to deal with people like you screaming. "Israel takes first strike in an unprovoked attack", bullshit

Things happened yesterday which you have no knowledge or understanding of, until you educate yourself then trying to make sense of today is going to be a struggle for you.
Oh forgive my ignorance, I coulda swore I read where Israel handed over territory in the West Bank and Gaza as part of a compromise, the response they got was rockets? I am incorrect?

It wasn't part of any agreed compromise, they simply withdrew from territory they'd invaded.
Did we continue bombing the Germans after they were pushed out of Northern France? I can't remember.

Oh ok so when they do not pull out you condemn them, and when they do pull out it doesn't count... Your argument is really getting ridiculous.

Didn't say it was, you were and Aussie were being smart asses and giving me the "lol" because I said they pulled out of territory which IN FACT they did, and IN FACT they got rocketed from those positions as a result. There is IN FACT no country called Palestine as you claim so I simply was wondering if Aussie found that humorous. I mean if we are going to ignore the context of the argument and resort to being a smart ass, we might as well add your "stupidity" to the mix.

Islam does exist, problem is they do not want any other  non Muslim people existing around them. The Jews can live in peace, it is Islam that can not.

and yes that is what it comes down to, a thriving peaceful nation that does not have to defend itself 24 7 or a fucked up Islamic bullshit state.

Look at the papers, the entire ME is sick of peaceful Islamic oppression.

Told you many times, I do not fear Islam, I think it is a fucked up bullshit oppressive culture and "religion" that has no place among a free tolerant society.
