Actually you're not really alone. Personally in some ways I thought it was better, but found it worse in more.

Half of the classes in BF2 were effectively useless. The AT class was probably the least used. It gimped you far too much. Engineer class was used almost exclusively by vehicle whores. Spec Ops was useful a handful of times per map. Healing from a medic kit is just too fucking lolzy, same for ammo crates.

Perks were meh but the customization that could be done within a class completely blew BF2 out of the water. Want to be a hunter with recon instead of sitting in a bush? Break out the VSS or shotguns.

Now, the only 'class' that didn't make a whole lot of sense in BC2 was the medic class. Giving them machine guns was kind of If they'd swapped the primary weapons of assault and medic it would've made a lot more sense and perhaps have been balanced better. I don't think any of us appreciate infinite noobtubing.

Was there ever any reason to play anything besides medic? Points per map were ridiculously higher with the class than with any other.

As MEC you could play support with the RPK and earn points from supplying all of the medics, but that was about it.

I still disagree. All of them could make a difference. Only the uncreative couldn't figure out how. I/O did throw the class balance off quite a bit, though. The only reason to be AT or engineer in one would be to play around with shotguns.

Disregarding my previously posted class setup...if given no other choice but to compress the Battlefield classes, I'd do something like this:

Assault (combining assault, support and AT/AA)
- 1) knife
- 2) sidearm
- 3) choice between: [rifle mounted with GL], [SMG or shotgun + RPG], [LMG + ammo satchel], [SMG or shotgun + AA]; assault class icon given four slightly different designs for the kit choice to be immediately recognizable (helmet/rifle, AT, LMG/ammo, AA)
- 4) 4 grenade slots: [frag valued at 1 slot (max of 3)], [smoke valued at 2 slots (max of 2)],  [flashbang valued at 3 slots (max of 1)]
- 5) choice between: [deployable barbed wire (~8M worth sound good?) usable once per player per game], [grappling hook (removable from hook end if more than one person is not climbing it)]
- x) note: (vehicle 'ammo aura' only available through armored and unarmored transports, land air or sea, including vehicle resupply done to self)

Medic
- 1) knife
- 2) sidearm
- 3) carbine/SMG
- 4) choice between: [two frag grenades], [one frag grenade, one smoke grenade]
- 5) BF2-style bandages (vehicle 'healing aura' only available through armored and unarmored transports, land air or sea, including vehicle healing done to self)
- 6) BF2-style shock paddles with two-max revives to any particular player regardless of source within a thirty-second span to eliminate flag-paddle circle-jerking

Engineer
- 1) knife
- 2) sidearm
- 3) SMG or shotgun
- 4) choice between: [AT mines (3 mines)], [C4 (2 packs)]
- 5) BF2-style wrench (vehicle 'healing aura' only
- x) choice between: [enhanced repair (repair aura works from any vehicle)], [2 extra mines or C4 packs]

Recon (specops and sniper)
- 1) knife
- 2) sidearm
- 3) choice between: [carbine with silencer or extra ammo], [SMG with extra ammo, with silencer or even more ammo], [marksman rifle with basic scope or silencer], [sniper rifle (with scope, of course) with extra ammo IF not .50]
- 4) 4 grenade slots: [frag valued at 1 slot (max of 4)], [smoke valued at 1 slot (max of 2)], [flashbang valued at 3 slots (max of 1)]
- 5) choice between: [C4 (4 packs)], [AP mines (1 device)]
- 6) zipline (removable only from source and destructible)
- x) choice between: [1 extra C4 pack or AP mine AND 1 extra grenade slot], [tear gas], [ghillie suit AND sporadic uav/sat jamming device (reduces grenade slots to 2)]
There, four classes with equipment swaps that make sense to me. If I were to modify it further, I'd find a way to reduce flashbang frequency even more. Unlocks = primary weapons (by type) globally and class extras that aren't grenades and basic gear. Also, [visual] character customization through unlocks.

BF2 Modern Combat started the lmg medic trend. It is a console game thing that transmitted to PC.

First attempt at a slightly altered class system somewhat inspired by previous game classes with some added stuff which I'd somewhat like in BF3 or at least be nearly like this

Recon: knife, pistol(can have silenced versions but they are not as damaging compared to non silenced), assault carbine/sniper rifle/DMR, claymore mines/motion sensor/laser designator(paints a target which makes any nearby friendly bombs drop to the target)/flashbangs, grappling hook or zipline, grenades, additional option is if you want your guy to have camoflouge or not

Medic: knife, pistol, smg or shotgun(medic should have limited anti infantry capability and just focus on healing), longer range medkit/faster healing medkit/auto injector, shock paddles(replaced by the auto injector if you equip that), grenades

Assault: knife, pistol, assault rifle, light rocket launcher(not as good as a pure rocket launcher but at least offers some AT capability)/grenade launcher/ammobag, throwable smoke grenades/smoke grenade launcher, grenades

Support: Knife, pistol(you can have a shotgun or smg with rocket launcher equipped), heavy rocket launcher/LMG, choice of rounds for either lmg or rocket launcher or some attachments for the rocket launcher like different guidance systems whether it is heat seaking or wire-guided,  I honestly don't know maybe additional choices of rounds for lmg or rocket launcher, grenades

Engineer: knife, pistol, shotgun/smg or assault carbine?(I don't know which), landmines/c4, repair torch/deployable defensive thing(like sandbags or something), grenades

I used to play a couple servers with that until I got fed up with my FoV being all fucked up by red bloody screen all the time (CoD4's shittiest contribution to the FPS genre) It's just medics focused way too much on killing to be of any help to anyone with that had low health.

Because of auto-regen, typically, by the time I got to a team mate that needed healing, he was already healed.  At times, just ended up getting killed trying to help a team mate.  Ended up, health packs are used mostly for myself.  Healing others was collateral.

I like simple. If it is easy to understand and learn, noobs end up learning how to play the game faster. You don't need too much stuff, just enough to make the game good. I used to play a couple servers with that until I got fed up with my FoV being all fucked up by red bloody screen all the time (CoD4's shittiest contribution to the FPS genre) It's just medics focused way too much on killing to be of any help to anyone with that had low health.
