The EU restricts trade with Israel, criticises them regularly, sends aid to the Palestinians, supports fair negotiations - you may have heard of the Oslo accords - and supports action in the UN.

China and Russia restrict trade with Israel, criticise them regularly, send aid to the Palestinians, support fair negotiations and support action in the UN.
Looks like both sides going along group lines (U.S. and allies support Israel/U.S. rivals don't support Israel) for the sake of annoying each other.

Meh, I don't care about any of them.

Well then clearly they aren't really trying with their sanctions.
Clearly more can be done, which I would support.
Nevertheless the EU does restrict trade with Israel, especially the occupied territories.

Why Australians care so much about people halfway around the world is beyond me. Shouldn't you be out working for the restoration of the Aboriginees ancient tribal lands or something? Or working to fix the Barrier Reef? Don't you have more pressing matters close to home?

Interesting, coming from someone who did sign up to be Cheney's footsoldier and go fight a for-profit war - albeit on minimum wage.

Joining Hamas wouldn't achieve anything, working democratically to achieve the same end might.
Negative. I joined when Clinton was still president and over a year before 9/11 happened.

Nice try deflecting the subject though. Admit it, you have no plan when it comes to any of this. You're in on this train of thinking solely because it allows you to vent your childish anti-authoritarian beliefs on a proxy. We get it, you hate America and pretty much anyone that has a place of power in the world. The problem is you're in your mid thirties and what was cool as a teenager becomes rather sad as you age. I had my copy of the Communist Manifesto and the Anarchists Cookbook when I was in my late teen's/early twenties. I wanted to fight the man too. I grew out of it.

This isn't even remotely your fight. Why the hell do you care about Israel or even America? Live your own inconsequential life and grow out of the childish hipster funk you've been stuck in.

The worst part is you're old enough to realize that actions have consequences and you can't just go dicking around with the borders on a map without causing a lot of pain, hardship, and yes, death. People aren't just going to pack up their belongings and peacefully move. It doesn't work like that. It never has. But you don't care about that, and you certainly don't give a shit about the Palestinians or even the Jews really. Your fight is with authority and they are merely your personal proxy. Grow the fuck up.

Nothing? The Palestinians wanted a two state solution. All that did was segregate them and make them easily contained. The only hope for the area is for the Palestinians to give up their dream of having their own country, fold themselves into Israel proper and then work internally to gain equal rights. All the pressure in the world isn't going to change the current state of affairs there, especially since it is built on nothing but stubborn pride on both peoples parts.

The Palestinians simply need to recognize that they've lost and there is no going back. No redrawing of borders to 1967 levels, nothing. This two state mess is what perpetuates the anger and hatred. Let it go already.

Nice try at psychoanalysis, I think you should stick to high-school mechanics problems.
As I said, why not try debating the points instead of attacking individuals - or stay out of the thread.

I know I'll try it:

You've read a few books about Libertarianism but neither really understand it or the ramifcations nor care that your 'liberty' may well mean someone elses suffering.
You've said often enough that you don't care about other people, if they live or die or how they live or even how the animals you eat are treated up to their death, whether they suffer horribly means nothing to you so long as you can fill your face and get ever fatter.

You're like all libertarians, selfish, self-absorbed, ignorant and ultimately irrelevant since libertarianism simply does not have a place in a coherent society. You espouse 'liberty' just so long as you get it at everyone elses expense and don't care that others don't because it could impinge on yours which is a consequence you can't consider.

Go live in a mountain top shack with a dog smug in the knowledge that he won't argue with your nonsense but will wag his tail and slobber when you need some fawning adulation.

The worst part is you're old enough to realize that actions have consequences and you can't just go dicking around with the borders on a map without causing a lot of pain, hardship, and yes, death.
Which is strange because the US and Israel have no difficulty deciding who can be displaced and to where, under what political system they should live and who gets to live and who dies.

"The man" is your conflation. I'd really stay out of psychoanalysis as its really not your field.

Its funny, you live under a system where one man has far more power than in almost any other democracy, and accuse me of being obesessed with "the man".
You even signed up to fight for "the man", as a communist turned libertarian, I'm confused.

I like this quote

"In all the human societies we have ever reviewed, in every age and in every state, there has seldom if ever been a shortage of eager young males prepared to kill and die to preserve the security, comfort and prejudices of their elders, and what you call heroism is just an expression of this fact; there is never a scarcity of idiots." Iain Banks

Like I said, you like your 'liberty' and don't care that "the man" stomps on everyone elses just so long as gas prices are low and beef is cheap.
As long as he's on your side you like it, when another starts getting bigger and looking like a threat you guys wail like babies for your Daddy to go smack the other.

No, I just pick battles that are worthy of my time and energy regardless of their current popularity among whatever circle I define myself to be in.

And who has all this power you speak of? Our President? Largely a powerless figurehead. He controls the military to a certain extent but he needs the approval of Congress to extend military action beyond 90 days. His primary role is that of chief executive, carrying out and enforcing the laws that Congress dictates. So no, I don't live in a dictatorship, sorry. I know you attributed all sorts of supernatural powers to Bush while he was president but for the most part he was just the guy that signed the checks.

Now as for you attacking my time in the service. Not only is that laughable, it should be beneath you. Alas it's not, so I guess I'll explain my reasoning. I didn't join to kill brown people or yellow people or red people or black people. I didn't join to be anyones pawn or tool. I joined because the military offered me a path to a free education and the opportunity to take a step back from my life to reflect before I dove headlong into a career path. Did anyone hold a gun to my head and tell me to join? No. Did I hear a marching tune, watch a flag wave, and have my heart fill with national pride on my way to the recruiter? No. I joined for my own personal reasons and not 'to defend the nation'. It was a job I was paid to perform. Nothing more, nothing less. Is it an important job? Absolutely. Someone has to do it.

Lastly, my belief system is based on people living their own lives and being responsible for themselves. Why that scares you or is cause for your derision is beyond me. I would think that someone with your daddy issues would embrace it wholeheartedly.

Clearly I've pegged you brilliantly.

You're very selective about who should be allowed 'liberty' though, clearly excluding a people who have had their country taken from them at the point of a gun.
'Libertarianism' is as esoteric and failed a concept as Marxism to put it bluntly, you're as daft as the people who wear little red stars while driving to their 9-5 job in their SUVs.
Clearly I've pegged you brilliantly.

An interesting fact about white people is that they firmly believe that all of the world’s problems can be solved through “awareness.”  Meaning the process of making other people aware of problems, and then magically someone else like the government will fix it.

This belief allows them to feel that sweet self-satisfaction without actually having to solve anything or face any difficult challenges.  Because, the only challenge of raising awareness is people not being aware.  In a worst case scenario, if you fail someone doesn’t know about the problem.  End of story.

What makes this even more appealing for white people is that you can raise “awareness” through expensive dinners, parties, marathons, selling t-shirts, fashion shows, concerts, eating at restaurants and bracelets.  In other words, white people just have to keep doing stuff they like, EXCEPT now they can feel better about making a difference.

Raising awareness is also awesome because once you raise awareness to an acceptable, aribtrary level, you can just back off and say “Bam! did my part.  Now it’s your turn.  Fix it.”

So to summarize – you get all the benefits of helping (self satisfaction, telling other people) but no need for difficult decisions or the ensuing criticism (how do you criticize awareness?).  Once again, white people find a way to score that sweet double victory.

Popular things to be aware of: The Environment, Diseases like Cancer and AIDS, Africa, Poverty, Anorexia, Homophobia,  Midde School Field Hockey/Lacrosse teams, Drug Rehab, and political prisoners.

No, this whole divergence within the thread came about when I asked you why you haven't joined Hamas if you feel so strongly about the situation in Israel. You then turned it into an attack on me for serving in my countries military.

So you're college educated already. Why haven't you hopped a flight to help out? Would it get in the way of you raising awareness on internet message boards? Go fight for Hamas. Save them from the Israelies. Are you a coward?

Like I said right at the start, joining Hamas would achieve nothing, nor would going to Palestine.

Using my vote and raising awareness are about all I can realistically achieve, same as you.

The difference I guess is that I have an interest in this, and do care, whereas you just want to eat and get fat.
