The score so far:

Team Fortress 2 was updated with some minor changes; however, several new files were included in the otherwise unimportant update.
Image 1: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2372797/DUN.png
[When decrypted, reads: "Clearly here is more space than Reeded. I wonder what else was here."]
Image 2: http://i48.tinypic.com/f0rinm.png (Same image, .tga alpha channel)
[When decrypted, reads: Same as above, essentially!]

The two images above are most likely simple hints pointing towards...

The Golden Wrench: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2372797/gold.png
Appears to unobtainable at the moment. It is an Engineer weapon which appears to transmute its victims into pure gold. Its attributes show nothing else of notice, though it does appear to be packaged with some "gametype" attributes, as well as a notification icon of some of sort pertaining to it.
Given the above information, it may serve as a temporary, "golden gun" of sorts. Especially since there appears to be a timer and a unique notification set to it. Why it is exclusive to the Engineer, who knows?

It's started. The update just now added a weird image which looks like an encoded letter from Saxton Hale, and a Golden Wrench that apparently has powers of some sort.

https://i.imgur.com/TRFa4.png

So far it has roughly been translated as "Clearly there is more space than needed. I wonder what else was here?"

The Golden Wrench.

"TF_HUD_Event_GoldenWrench_C" "%s1 has found Golden Wrench no. %s2!"
"TF_HUD_Event_GoldenWrench_D" "%s1 has destroyed Golden Wrench no. %s2!"

And on the TF2items.com all items list, it's right there amongst the others. Says it's imbued with strange power: http://www.tf2items.com/allitems.php

It turns people into gold statues when you kill them.

What could it all mean.

Engineer takes on some mannerisms from a stereotypical prospector.

Item has appeared on TF2 items with the statement that it can be found and crafted (though for craft a engy token is needed which cannot be made without the engy update)

I reckon that crafting page added that line automatically after it saw the golden wrench item information.

I doubt it can be crafted like that.

Updated the OP with a useful summary from someone on facepunch.

Wrench apparently has an item no. like the soldier medal, indicating it could be a limited item... (if so I am going to rage so bad)

with every update i just care less and less

this shitty 'trivia' that they throw into every update, throwing every steam-forums geek into a frenzied 'egghunt'...

i just can't help but think it distracts from the fact that they're adding fuck-all of worth to the game.

people are all caught-up in KEWL!!! and OH WOW STEAM ARE SMART/AWSUM/FUNNIES etc. without actually stopping to say...

so fucking what? more pointless weapons that add nothing of worth except increased balance issues

bearing in mind one of the main strengths of tf2, both casually and competitively, used to be its flawless game-balance...

Yeah because I've totally drooled over this and past updates. You say you don't care yet you use every chance you get to bash people who might enjoy this.

you'd have to be a fucking moron to somehow 'enjoy' a golden wrench

what does it actually add to the game? amazing.

It adds a new game mode, adds another gameplay dimension, and is finally a much needed engineer update.

okay now tell me the positive benefits those 'additions' bring

other than prolonging the lifespan of the game for attention-deficit kids, which doesn't actually 'benefit' the fps aspects of the game at all, it merely adds a longer shelf-life to the game as a business product.

Why is giving a game longer shelf life a bad thing?

And more to the point, these updates are free. Some business product modal that is you goose.

err are you thick or just don't get basic business? every time they add a new update they remarket tf2 and put it on sale again... the idea is to draw in new customers, people that are fickle-minded and attracted to aesthetic updates and little gimmicks like golden wrenches. it's basically pushing people over that fine-line to make the committed decision to purchase the game, based on little inane nothings. i have yet to see how any of the new content have 'enriched' gameplay: they have ruined balance, made public-play intolerably chaotic and introduced random 'reward' systems that bring no real 'reward' at all and just introduce ever more impossible-to-balance complexity to a game that simply DOES NOT need it.

but okay, you're entertained with tf2, for the 2 hours every fortnight you play it. right on. guess that's the market they're aiming for. that market can keep it.

Crying because the game devs actually continue to support a game.

Wow, you're so hardcore.

'support' is a pretty arguable term here. 'add shit' =/= 'support'. supporting a game would be providing fixes and making useful alterations/additions to enhance the strengths that the game already has, e.g. adding finely-balanced maps that provide stimulating public play as well as optional competitive platforms. if your idea of 'support' is "throw tons of community-created content into the game, that adds only aesthetic gimmicks" and "introduce yet more game-modes that people will play for 2 weeks and then abandon for the classic-two" then... well...

wow, you're such a fucking casual.
