I'm sure all of you know about this already, but I've got a question for those who have done it (or at least know more details about it).

Do you have to have a fully-functional RB1 disc to do this?

The reason I ask is that a friend's roommate has both RB1 and RB2, but we can't play much on RB1 because there's a fatty scratch/ring on the disc, so sometimes we'll be able to play a song, sometimes the menus don't work, etc. Does the XBox rip the songs from the original onto the HDD or do you just download them? Oh yeah, that reminds me, they never play 360 online, and don't have an XBox live account, so do you have to pay for a month or year or whatever it is just to transfer the songs?

http://gizmodo.com/5040021/exporting-so … -hdd-space

"One of Rock Band 2's more thoughtful features is that you'll be able to export most of the tracks from your Rock Band 1 disc to play in Rock Band 2 on the Xbox 360 (DLC works with it automatically). Harmonix has just dropped some of the details on how you'll make this happen. It's easy, and it'll cost you about $5 (and a considerable chunk of hard drive space), as expected.

On the day Rock Band 2 shimmies onto store shelves, Rock Band 1 will get an update that'll add an "export" option. It'll ask you for a password, which is included with your copy of Rock Band 2. After you punch in the code you'll have to pay up, but Harmonix says it won't be more than five bucks (the money is for rights holders). Then all of your songs, or at least the ones you're allowed to port, will be copied to your hard drive. Harmonix's PR dude John Drake also said that if you buy Rock Band 2 and just rent Rock Band 1, you'll probably be able to copy the songs as long as you pay the fee.

There are some songs you might not be able to move over, but Harmonix hasn't said which ones yet. One thing to consider is that if you copy over most of the songs, while Harmonix didn't dish the exact numbers, you're probably talking a couple gigabytes of your hard drive permanently gone (roughly ~30MB/song x 58 songs = 1.74GB), which might be an issue if you've only got a 20GB model. Still, we're pretty happy about this."

... You'll need an XBox Live account (not sure if Gold is required though), and 400 Live Points ($5).  You'll need the RB1 disk to export the files.

$5 isn't much money... Buts its pretty weak you have to pay for songs you already own, just so you don't have to swap back to RB1 to play a song you want.

Yeah I agree. But $5 is definitely a deal when it comes to choosing between that or replacing an RB1 disc.

In fact, once I get my own PS3 and Rock Band, I plan on buying the original RB and paying the $5 anyway. Will be nice to have it all in one place, and will add more variety to the world tour.

I did this the other week when I picked up RB2.

You go into RB (you can even rent a disc from Blockbuster or somewhere), have an update put onto the game...go to "Export Songs", pay for the license...and they'll show up in RB2.

I didn't really mind paying for the extra songs because there's no more linear solo tour. You can just play Solo with your band, and having more songs to choose from when you make a setlist is awesome.

Very worth the money. Trust me.

Only thing that sucks is it takes up like...1.7 GB of space on my already small 20 GB 360 HDD.

If I was into the whole RB thing I probably would pay it too (actually I wouldn't, I would just put the old disc in)

BUT when you say $5 over replacing the RB1 disc.... its not replacing it. You need a RB1 disk to do this, so if you need to replace your RB1 disk you will have to do so + pay $5

Seriously? Aww crap. So I guess that means it does just rip the data off the disc? Well I suppose we could go out and rent RB1, which is another $5.

Wait a sec, so what's stopping people who don't already own RB1 to just go out and rent it and get a shitload of more songs for an easy $10?

That's exactly what I'm going to do since I don't have RB1.  Better guitar and drumset too...

Hmm I don't have a RB1 disk but I have a bunch of songs from it on RB2...so you don't have to have the disk (or at least I didn't).

Maybe it was DLC? Apparently you have to start up RB1 first and export the songs from there.
