So yeah, I managed to "acquire" R6 VEGAS 2 and play it.

First Thoughts
  • Looks a lot like Vegas 1
  • Improved graphics
  • Smoother
  • More of the samey tactical awesomeness Vegas 1 gave us
Ok, from the beginning. Once you start up Vegas 2, you can see that it's been changed for the better - well, lets hope for that. The menu layout is very different, this time your character is shown there. Here is where the cool part comes inYou now customise your character... COMPLETELY.Here are some of your options
  • Armor
  • Equipment
  • Weapons
  • Clothing
The game revolves around a ranking system - an in-depth one at that - for each unique kill you get, you get XP points... and you get closer to completing challenges. There are 3 challenges, each with 10 ( I think ) levels and each of them requiring you to kill with a certain degree of skill. When you pass a level of a challenge, you either gain XP points or a new weapon.
  • Marksman - Headshots for this one - Unlocks more accurate assault and sniper rifles.
  • Assault - Explosives and the sort - Unlocks more powerful Rifles and Automatic rifles and machine guns.
  • CBQ - Close range kills, back kills and blinding kills - Unlocks new shotguns and sub machine guns.

Starts to sound cool. Just like BF2, although this actually requires some skill - Killing a guy normally ( chest shot ) will get you nothing but
XP.
XP Points
Ubisoft have been smart on this and decided that XP points only get you certain unlocks. There are several Army ranks up to the rank "Elite". When you rank up, you either get new clothing ( which does nothing in terms of gameplay ) or new Armor which really does change the gameplay.Armor gets you new vests, arm and leg protection, which can come in very handy at times.

We have another new thing, which was hugely lacking in Vegas 1....SPRINTING!!!!!!!!!
Now, any fan of Vegas will agree with me that this was desperately needed in 1. Don't worry fans, it's here and it works beautifully.
You may ask how this is connected with armor?
Well, it's simple, the more armor you put on, the less manouvrability you have - i.e less sprinting.
These 2 factors can be the key to you living or dying through and Act. Choose wisely, never under estimate your surroundings.
So far so good, I like the additions and want to seriously ace these challenges so I can grab the best weapons for the job.

I'll be looking around the PSN for a demo on this, that's assuming it's on the PS3. Looks quite cool from what you're saying, I've only ever played one Rainbow Six game, and that was one of the first ones on the PS1

As my post didn't work properly, here is the second part.

Gameplay

Probably the underlying factor in whether you will like this game or not. This game is NOT a game where you can jump in and shoot everyone. Although you can do that, it requires some skill. It's not for the feint hearted and it really does get the adrenaline pumping.
Lets check the basics of such a FPS
  • Proper recoil
  • Guns feels powerful and real
  • AI outsmart you and cause difficulties
  • Teammates are not retards
  • One shot, one kill
  • Proper, accurate explosions

It really is full bodied.
The first real mission was directed at a warehouse, where some Terrorists ( yeah, the usual bastards ) were holding some hostages and were "taking" stuff. Dropped in like old Vegas, start off... But this time it takes me 1 minute less to get to my desired entry point. I sprint there.
Great, sprint is fucking awesome... But shit.... I didn't realise bad guys started appearing. Gunned down, take cover. Change team to ASSAULT. Lez do it. Guys are piled behind some crates.... Lob a grenade over and the effects are BEAUTIFUL. Physics are sexy and the grenade causes a bit of a kerrfuffle. I start getting shot at, can't see him, so I start looking around... Details on movement of the gun are brilliant, you sway a bit the gun sways with you; and the blurr effects are better than that of Crysis. Linearity is still there... if only slightly. Now more options open up as to how to tackle a situation - sadly, not enough. It should be more like Swat4 - but anyway, it's good to breathe some fresh air and kill the terrorists from windows or the sort.
Just a taster....

Graphics are lovely. Detailed, gritty and realistic. Can't complain.

If there is one gripe about this game: is that it's too much like Vegas one. Although the improvements are big and they really do improve the game, the core is still there and it seems untouched. I guess you can't improve a nearly perfect tactical shooter.
Oh wait, another gripe... Sniping sucks beyond belief. No breathing, not instability, no nothing. You could probably kill all the guys in a small room with a sniper rifle. That is how easy it is.

They have upped the anti and created a game which is both challenging yet forgiving at the worst of times. It's fast paced at times, and at others you must use your skill and nerve to take down some bastards.

I tend to find the sniper rifles pointless. A G3 with either ACOG or 6x scope on single shot mode does the job at medium range and "Long" distance. I say it like that because there are few long distance kill opportunities. 30 rounds, good accuracy and it feels pretty fun to use, really can't wait to unluck the SA 80.

Jord, you been playing Vegas 2 or are you talking about Vegas 1?

There are more long distance shots in Vegas 2.

I'm talking about 2, I won't give examples of the few opportunities so's to not spoil the story or surprise of secret snipers for people just buying it. I found them few and far between, nothing the trusty standard rifles can't handle.

What were your thoughts on it?
I think I am 2 levels below unlocking the SA80.

I've gone through it three times now and would gladly do it again if I wasn't moving house. I'd go with 8/10. Love how shooting feels and knocking off double taps with the mp5. Only thing i would add is some sort of melee attack or knife, I'd also add more rappel opportunities because other than rappelling I can't bring myself to use the pistols in normal combat.

Better than the first in every way.

I actually think at times guns are overpowered. I tested my theory by going full out only with a pistol, and it was hilariously easy. Headshot, headshot, 2 chest shots... etc.

Enemies do tend to do the same thing most of the time. They blind fire which is pointless at ranges of 10 metres+.

The Glock is fun if you've found it, it's full auto. 18 rounds with mag extension.

Completey agree. Got it for me 360, and me and my friends from school play clan matches all the time.
1 error though, it's 20 levels for each category.

Hah, just like Jack Bauer in 24, defeating autos with his pistol.

Just bought a 360. Wanted to get Ace Combat with it but they didn't have it, so I got Vegas 2. Will now proceed to make bed (need somewhere to sit) and plug in 360.

Apologies, hadn't paid close attention to those things. It would be good that when you pass another level, it tells you what you reciev; instead of just a little noise and a "You have passed level 3 Marksman!". Because I can't remember what each level holds.

Yea it's no prob. If you press start, or after the game and go to A.C.E.S you can see how many points you have and what you unlock at that level. At 18 Marksman you get L85A2 and at 20 you get L96 Arctic Warfare

One huge problem with the game is that the unlocks are either the same or significantly worse than the guns you start off with. I found myself always reverting to the SIG552 and UMP to take out guys. They are the best guns available; it's a bit stupid to have unlocks when the guns themselves are worse than the default.

I am already at level 20 for CQB, and all the guns you get from that line are shitter than the ones you start off with. Especially the last shotgun.

If I can suit up like that mega-armored flamethrower guy on the beginning of Beverly Hills Cop 3, count me in for 0.01 MPH.

Only thing that annoys me is your sidearm having infinite ammo.  This "feature" was also in the first Vegas, why did they put it in 2?  What the hell were they thinking?  There's enough ammunition as there is from the equipment boxes and from dead enemies...

if you pick up a diff side arm off the field it tends to have a few clips instead of infinite ammo
