My friend is having problems with overheating. When he plays Far Cry the screen goes black (& computer freezes)and when he plays BF2 his screen freezes. (& computer freezes) He had Dell out to his house 3 times. First time replaced fans.(didn't help) Second time replaced heat sink on processor. (didn't help) Third time replaced motherboard. (didn't help) We did clean all the dust out of the case too. It doesn't seem that the fans won't kick on high when under heavy load.

Specs: Dell XPS (1 1/2 years old)
Intel Pen. 4 3.2 gig
3 gig dd2 400 ram
Invid 6800 PCI X

A tempery fix is he cracked the case open and ran a small fan to cool it off. It runs fine then. I know dell has the bios lock so any joe smo can not screw with fan settings. But is there away around this to turn them on high? Could it be the power supply taking a crap or vid card? I know he added more ram after he recieved the computer. Could mixing different manufactures of ram cause it to overheat. I know the temp. of the processor at the time it goes down is around 120 deg. C or F soming like that. I know it was hot !

To top it all off the fourth call to Aupo @ Dells Support in India. They said there nothing more they can do for him. (When he bought this computer, he bought the extended service and at home repair for more money.) I know they were out there 3 times, but come on, he paid for the ext. service!! That is a kick in the ***.

Any help will be great !

my little brother had the same problem with his pc. it would over heat and shut off at 120 deg. C (about 270deg F) to fix it we did this...

-went to best buy and bought a toube of thermal paste.
-opened his cyber power gaming case and took off the heat sink
-emptied the toube off thermal paste onto the top of the processor and spread it so that it covered the entire top of the processor making sure that none of it oozed on to the mobo
-placed the heatsink back on and started the pc
-ran fine and has no problems sience!

you can always try that because a toube of thermal paste costs maybe 10 bucks or even cheaper and it takes only about 5 minutes to fix the pc (mainly because you need to be careful about spreading the thermal paste)

Will try. I guess it cheaper than telling him to spend 100's of dollars on a water cooling system !!

If it's overheating, then give us the case temperature, even if that means leaving a thermometer in there.

If the case is boiling, then check the airflow in your case(mine has perfect airflow and even the processor rarely breaks 38C) also, make sure that the case has an intake fan at the front and an out at the rear, an intake fan on the side doesn't hurt either.
If the case is designed to have a windtunnel effect, then case clutter could be an issue, try to keep it as clear as you can.

Can that thing even handle DDR2? I mean a 1.5 YO 3.2 GHz P4, I doubt it, and that could well be his problem there

No actually, you see I'd know what I was talking about if I knew exactly what's wrong with his PC, but I don't have it with me do diagnose properly.
Now sure I could learn all about pentiums, but then again, I could just know about the latest and greatest of both Intel and AMD and Pentium doesn't fall into either of those now does it

you should also make sure that the PC is in  a well ventilated area. I know its common sense but that might be the problem

It's just, I don't see how running DDR2 memory on a mobo that takes DDR causes heat problems. Memory barely produces any heat anyway.

I hear you on that !! I personally build all of my computers (2 so far) and I never ran into any over heating. I tried convencing him to build one, but he was sold on there service. That worked!!!!! Yeah Right. Dell = Hell

Thanks for all the info guys! I will run these ideas past him. If any other thoughts come up just drop on this tread.
