My friend is having problems with overheating. When he plays Far Cry the screen goes black (& computer freezes)and when he plays BF2 his screen freezes. (& computer freezes) He had Dell out to his house 3 times. First time replaced fans.(didn't help) Second time replaced heat sink on processor. (didn't help) Third time replaced motherboard. (didn't help) We did clean all the dust out of the case too. It doesn't seem that the fans won't kick on high when under heavy load.
Specs: Dell XPS (1 1/2 years old)
Intel Pen. 4 3.2 gig
3 gig dd2 400 ram
Invid 6800 PCI X
A tempery fix is he cracked the case open and ran a small fan to cool it off. It runs fine then. I know dell has the bios lock so any joe smo can not screw with fan settings. But is there away around this to turn them on high? Could it be the power supply taking a crap or vid card? I know he added more ram after he recieved the computer. Could mixing different manufactures of ram cause it to overheat. I know the temp. of the processor at the time it goes down is around 120 deg. C or F soming like that. I know it was hot !
To top it all off the fourth call to Aupo @ Dells Support in India. They said there nothing more they can do for him. (When he bought this computer, he bought the extended service and at home repair for more money.) I know they were out there 3 times, but come on, he paid for the ext. service!! That is a kick in the ***.
