its serial ata. basically an interface for a faster hd than a reg ide.

it's about same.. sata's more expensive but only for about $20

Besides the performance a very nice thing about Serial ATA is the much thinner cables (data-cable but also the power cable).

There's not much in it price wise, but with SATA-II you can get an external transfer speed up to 300MB/s. Normal SATA runs at about 150MB/s whereas the fastest ATA (IDE) drives run at about 133MB/s. If you can go for SATA, then do it. Just remember to press F6 and insert the SATA floppy disk when prompted whilst installing Windows.Junior_Mud wrote:

The cables are lot tidyer if you have a modded case and i think satas better tbh...and the smiley meant i was jking bout the noob thing
nice, I appreciate all the feedback. I think I'm gonna go price them and see the diff, I have one 60gb now, I think the slow 7200rpm one or is the IDE slow one the 5000ish one? I dunno, I need more though.

RAID has nothing to do with SATA. You can also have an IDE-Raid. The performance boost depends on the controller (real Hardware-Raid or the more common "software"-raid controler on consumer grade motherboards). Only the raid 0 would make transfers faster, raid 1 simply mirrors the disks leaving you with a more reliable system (if one harddisk would crash you still have all data on the second drive).Duramen1 wrote:

Another thing to the external speed: it does not really matter for us home users if the bus speed is 300 mb/sec or 150 mb/sec eventhough you would think it's twice as fast. This is just the bandwidth on the bus. The actual transferrate you get is determined by the harddisk which is much less than 300 mb/sec. I think they are a bit more than 50 mb/sec for a midrange sata harddisk. Please correct me on this if I am wrong I am just guessing.

Sata drive performance to me does not seem to be that much better than IDE/PATA. I'm running a 250GB Sata drive, with 2 80GB PATA drives for extra storage space. The 150 MB/Sec transfer rate of SATA is well beyond what most current home HDD's support, but is usefull if you're using a SATA ramdrive or other solid state media.
SATA is also hot swappable, which is nice for server use as you can simply undo a rack and pull a drive w/o having to turn off power or shut down an operating system.
As for loading extra drivers in windows setup, this depends on your motherboard chipset. My N-Force 4 chipset was happy enough with the standard drivers loaded by windows xp setup in the first place. Since I am anal about cable management I like the sata cables though, so easy to make them nice and pretty and tied in place, without taking up lots of room or having to resort to complex origami like constructions just to hide darn IDE cables.

i just recently installed 2 Maxtor 100Gb SATA drives, and let me say that there is a big difference. My BF2 maps load much faster, and data verification time is cut to about 5sec. It takes me about 20-30sec to load 64player Strike at Karkand, and my video setting are set to all high. Before when i had IDE HD it took about a minute to load the map, and 20sec to verify data. but it also depends on the system that you are running. so i would recommend SATA HD.frank32 wrote:

Get 2 and RAID 0 them lol, Preferably Raptors. Then you would notice a difference.
