So, when I saw this game on warez-bb TV I was somewhat surprised: any news on Supreme Commander's expansion pack had evidently been sucked into a black hole of hype created by certain other games, making its release known only to nobody. Supreme Commander wasn't a hugely popular game, but it was good. The SP campaign was amusing, and the multiplayer was awesome. Thus, I was pleasantly surprised that an expansion pack was available and proceeded to acquire it immediately.

Forged Alliance is certainly an improvement on its unexpanded younger brother; the AI has been improved enough to provide a challenge to anyone beyond the level of fuckwit, a la the original. All the maps included for skirmishes and multiplayer matches from Supreme Commander are also playable in FA, along with the same amount of new maps, putting the total map count above 30, which is actually quite a lot. The existing armies have each been given a dozen or two of new units. Instead of these being reskins of old units with added lens flare, they actually do add extra layers of gameplay, which has been improved altogether by better unit AI, a better GUI, and several new options such as the ability to save templates for building units.

As for the rest, I'm not sure. There's something about having to stop aliens from destroying the universe, but I haven't played anything beyond skirmishes yet. In any case, it's a game highly worth playing.

SupCom is a beast.

Arty batteries of 100+ units have my seal of approval.

I love this game thing is its so laggy! In the single player missions when theres 4 massive built armies i get 1fps but luckily only lasts about 5 mins cause with all the ships that I spam and experimental units I build in 10 mins it goes up...to 10fps...

Awesome game though gonna buy it when I get my new PC

Nice review / thoughts Lucien.

I myself tried the SupCom demo ages ago, and just couldn't get into it. The game felt a bit 'clunky' and disjointed. Maybe it's a whole different world in the final retail release, but... it didn't move me to the point of ordering it .

I tried the original game demo back when I had a single CPU core, I found it to be kinda complicated.  But I think I thought it was boring just because it was running so bad.  I'll try it again some time with my dual core now.

It only lacks in that all three sides are very similar. Maybe the exp and the new faction will change that.

Very deep. Lots of style. Potential for huge battles.

Who needs 100+?

I hope that patches have improved the game, but when I tried multiplayer shortly after it came out, it was as clunky as hell, even hosted on a computer with 4GB of RAM and a quad-core CPU.

I thought of buying the expansion pack, but the game was sitting next to it on the shelf and ten dollars cheaper. I also wasn't too enthused with the cliffhanger ending.
