HOW TO:: Run 2142 in a window and switch back and forth from desktop

So this is an easy, lest we say mod? Nahhh, just copying a file and changing the copy a bit...

So for people with good processors this is great, for those with sucky ones, you can try it but I wont gaurentee anything... I run an AMD AM2 2.23 GHz Dual Core processor and run AIM, MSN, TS, X-Fire, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and skype (idle) with about a 64% CPU usage...

Okay heres what you do, im guessing that you have a shortcut to 2142 on your desktop so Right click that >>> Hit "SEND TO - - - DESKTOP (Create Shortcut)

You should see a "Battlefield 2142(2)" On your desktop, rename it to (suggested) "2142 WINDOWED" and your original to "2142 FULL SCREEN"

Now right click "2142 WINDOWED" select properties

Now click the tab, "Shortcut"

Now click "Target"

You should be looking at something like "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142" (WITH THE QUOTES WITHIN THE BOX !! IMPORTANT !!)

Now add this to the end of it (seperate the + and the Quote with a space) +menu 1 +fullscreen 0 +szx xxx +szy yyy

dont use xxx and yyy, use your screen dimension multiplied by 1.5 (reccomended you get half your full screen about)... example :: Instead of 1440x900 us 960x600, then run the WINDOWED and enjoy! NOTE: ALT + TAB TO SWITCH FROM 2142 TO DESKTOP BECAUSE 2142 LOCKS YOUR CURSOR IN THE BOX UNLESS YOU ALT TAB...

Extras... For widescreens not supported add +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx xxx +szy yyy

to your target for regular game file (USE xxx and yyy as your ACTUAL Screen dimensions.. NOTE THIS LAUNCHES IT FULL SCREEN.)

All you need to do is press escape so you go to the menu screens and then you can alt tab out of the game.

i understand the logic, but the point of it is to have all your info at hand and keep your eyes on multiple things and have crap being able to pop up without shutting your game down...

what the fudge? wouldn't a simple alt+enter sufice? It changes from full screen to half screen so you can see the game AND desktop. Or you can simply alt+tab - but it minimizes the screen completely so you can only see the desktop. Don't think i'm stupid if it doesn't work, i haven't yet tried it lol

Some computers might not handle that the game is minimized. And you only have 15 (12) sec to you spawn again and if you have a computer that use a long time to load the image up again they might be dead again.
So if you have it in window you can just press Alt + Tab and then you will have another window there. I use it myself because I have 1600*1200 resolution, So I can use 1024*768 or more and then still be able to see what people type in IRC, msn or even see whos talking on Teamspeak.

Well you have to set a resolution to run it at, you can find your current desktop resolution by Right Clicking your background and selecting properties...

Then clicking the "settings" tab and look below...

I recommended running at 1.5 times your desktop background, that leaves you with half of your screen left

and PhaxeNor delivers my point... Going from full screen, alt tabbing to desktop, typing, seeing what people typed... then getting back into the game is practically useless when you can watch everything at once and switch in a second

NOTE: IF 2142 GOES BLACK THEN SIMPILY ALT+TAB TO MONITOR (while its in window) AND CLICK THE WINDOW AND DRAG A BIT AND LET GO, YOUR SCREEN SHOULD BE INSTANTLY RESTORED.

When I do that and then try to alt-tab back into the game I just get a black screen. Then I have to CTRL ALT DEL out of it and restart the game. Not everytime, but at least 75% of the time it happens.

Ok, I run at 1024x768 ... work out the rest for me, because I pretty much don't get the bit where you 'times' it by 1.5 ... that'd mean I'd be on 1536x1152 ... and thats bigger than I already have!!

Do you mean divide it by 1.5 ... someone help me I'm really confused here! Karma for an answer.

he means divide. with your 1024x768 i'd try running at 800x600. basically that smaller resolution has to be the game's one - else it won't all fit on your screen

i run 1440x900 and in the target line 1024x768 - it doesn't have to be half, but making it too near the original size means you won't be able to see outside it.

er yeah divide by 1.5

or you can multiply by .5 and subtract that from the total...

and 800x600 should work fine for you..

this is also how I can close 2142 when It locks up, on full screen it WILL lock up and im boned, when its windowed its just an unresponsive program
