The motherboard is the only thing I would be concerned about. Dell uses proprietary motherboards. You can try and call them and find out if it's standard atx or not. When I did that, all I got was the run around, and never got a straight answer from them. They just continued to try and sell me a new case and motherboard. In the end I built a new PC.

EDIT: my dell is a 4700 and its about a year old, and my motherboard is just about the only thing i havnt fried yet and its the only thing i havnt replaced.

what i did was take my cpu to an computer fix-it place/cyber cafe, and told them to swap my old computer to a new case.  i knew nothing about computers at the time and it worked out great.

ok thanks.  Well ive decided to just make my own computer, here is what i am putting into it.
Can someone just verify that it will work once its all together, like if i have one peice that wont work with another.

Case-- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811145066
Motherboard-- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131564
Sound card-- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6829102188
Speakers-- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6829102188
Video card-- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814102624
HardDrive-- I already have a WD Raptor 64 GB harddrive. (10000 RPM)
I have also purchased a HardDrive fan to cool my drive.
I have a Z-board
I ordered a Razor mouse.

I have a heatsink for my dell with a pentium 4 processor, that will work with my motherboard?, no?
Heatsinks are made for the processor not the motherboard right?

AGAIN!, i am pretty new at this computer stuff so be nice please.
request anymore info if you need to.

What am i supposed to do with my left over Dell parts?
I have a radeon X300 128 MB video card and a sound blaster 24-bit sound card. there in good shap and decent products. freebies?

Depends? what socket type is your processor? you have a M/B for a socket 775 your computer is pretty old it could be the other types of processor 478/423 pin? just check your processor if it has no pins on it then your all good to go..

meh e-bay ur old stuff what i do usually or just give it to friends who have crappy computers lol

ATI 100-435705 Radeon X1800XT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card
God, i had no idea they were making cards at 512MB nowdays. I just have a 128MB 9800Pro (doing pretty well), so I can only imagine the graphics you will be getting..

um.. im sorry to say this, but i am not sure about the whole pin thing.. i will look at it later cause if you have ever had a dell, you know what kind of battle it is getting the side panel off, its like running at a tank on karkand with your knife.

EDIT: Im bored, let me go find the flat head screw driver, brb.

ok, i have a LGA 775 like Maj.Do said. and its 3.0 Ghz and 800 Mhz, would that work with my motherboard and my videocard?, someone told me that the video card would push my processor to much and i need to upgrade it.

what about a Gforce?, the only reason i havnt looked to much into them is i keep hearing stuff that they burn up easily. my X300 ATI has done great with the abuse i have done to it, its got no fans for it. i feel the pain it takes, my new comp will have better circulation though. so i dont burn any more things up like i have done to my dell. go with the Gforce or ATI?.... why or why not?.

There is really no real reason to pick nVidia over ATi or vice-versa. It's a personal thing, some people will claim one to be better than the other but just go with what your gut tells you.

Me? I would go for the ATi, I've been using ATi cards for a while and they have never failed me. The X1800 XT is arguably the fastest single card solution available, it's what I'm upgrading to for the new year. You get a great card with 512 MB VRam for quite a tidy price.

yep, im getting it.. i have only changed a few things with my specs-
Buying better case-
Buying another GB of ram-
i have 1GB and 2 256 MB so i want to dual channel that with 2 GB... i have 2 256 that i might just throw away, or give away/EBAY, who knows, i still have that X300 and Creative sound card....

well id go with ATi because ive been using them since the 8000 series.  never failed me.  Ive also used a x300Se .  was a great card for the budget.  Now i have a X850XT.  and waiting for the x1900XT.  : ).   if i were u i would get maybe a non ATi branded x1800XT.  like pwoercolor

Well the X1800 is not the fastest card. It barely beats the 6800 GS by 5 to 15 fps depending on the game.
The 7800 GT and GTX are the fastest cards.

u know like instead of ATi Radeon X1800XT.  theres a Powercolor x1800XT, or PNY 9800 Pro.  ATi sells the chips 2.  Also too the guy who said that the 7800 is the fastest.  It will be beating soon in Jan. with the release of the x1900XT.  : ) go ati! lol.  A x1800XT can beat almost 2 7800s if u have a liquid nitrogen cooling system. home made. not sold.  with that and some help from sweedish guys i think u can get the core to over 1.2ghz.  damn thats fast lol  but no one will do that.  thats gonna cost like 800

HaHa, well that means the x1800XT might go down in price, sweet. save me more money, so far its gonna cost me about 1100 in all to get my computer all souped up, thanks for all the help guys. i really aprreciate all the help.
