During another one of my StumbleUpon rounds (firefox extension, has taken over my life), I found this optical illusion. I would really like to know what the heck is going on that causes our eyes to do that, so +1 to whoever posts the mechanisms at work first.

your eyes get the image "burned" in for lack of a better phrase - like a CRT left at "Press Control Alt Delete to log on" for too long.

Seriously, just like when you look at the sun.

I hate these things with contacts, keeping my eyes open that long makes them start sliding around. Either I blink to correct it or see a blurred image that doesn't make much sense.

it's a much more intense extension of the same phenominon.  When you look at the sun, your retina actually bruises for lack of a better term.

This image uses a negative image to amplify the effect.

Good call, I looked around using that thinking and I found something. The color does get "burned in", but it's the opposite color that remains. By looking at the inverse colors, and then switching to BW photo, you see the real colors then. See Opponent Process at Wikipedia if you are interested. Thanks to PuckMercury for pointing me in the right direction.
