Will Mechs ever be used in battle?

Are Mechs really that great? I mean, sure, they look cool, every sci-fi/futuristic story features them, but think about it: Would man ever make such things? What are the advantages of a walking weapons platform? I can't think of any that would counter the tremendous disadvantages you face with one. Things such as a large sillouhette/profile, wear/tear of walking mechanism, the many weakspots by such a shape/form, speed/endurance versus fuel efficiency, the limits of how much recoil it can handle, etc.

Are they really an effective and economical alternative to modern vehicles such as APC's and Tanks?

only advantage mechs have is greater mobility, they can go where tracks/wheels can't, like steep slopes. but a plane is still more efficient.

we'll see mech-suits for infantry before we'll see giant robots.

no if we were to ever make mechs they wouldn't be flashy....... not to mention i don't think that the military would make a weapons platform that a 15 yr transvestite can operate (yes most japanese hero's are 15 yr trany's, read the gamespy article)
