i am looking to start doing something constructive with my time, and since i already make textures for some people on occasion, i thought i might take up modeling.

1. Is there a good beginner program you would suggest
and
2. do you know of any good in-depth guides on how to start out

The choice of the programme depends on what you want to do.
Do you want to create models for computer games?

im pretty sure the programs cost loads, but there are other ways tho...

and from what i could tell, its hard to do. i tried it once and got EXTREMLY confused. if you do learn, write a guide for me.

Milkshape is decent, but it's quite limited. 3dsMax and Maya are good for game rendering stuff, as in low polygon but detailed models. For architectural stuff, formZ would be your best choice, as formZ is focused a lot on precision and accuracy. If you're modelling free-will imagination, try Anim8or, it's not the best for precise/detailed stuff though.

Yes, some of those cost shitloads, some are free, but we all know what warez is here. And let's not discuss that.

The industry uses 3D Studio Max and AutoDesk Maya, plus is starting to move into using ZBrush and Luxology's modo software.

You are going to need a LOT of time, a lot of patience, and resources such as http://www.cgtalk.com and http://www.highend3d.com for tutorials and constructive critique.
