Gun lovers! I need some help!

Hello all. I need some advice on purchasing a firearm. I've been shooting for years and really enjoy the sport, and also my right to carry a concealed weapon. So I'm asking you, the gun lovers of BF2S, for any suggestions on my first self-bought handgun. I have always been a fan of the larger calibers, such as .45 ACP, .357/.38, and even up to the .44mag. Primarily I am experienced in the good old sixguns, but I really love a nice .45 ACP. So my question is, what would be a reliable, durable, and most of all, fun handgun to own? My price range is up to ~$650-700 US. I guess my dilemma is because of my father, I have mainly been exposed to Colt, Glock, S&W, and Ruger. So please tell me some good brands/models. Cost of ammuntion is not a problem, I have a Dillon reloading press with dies for most of the larger calibers. Thanks in advance guys.

Oh and please no hippies that just bash gun ownership/control. Gun control is being able to hit your target. That is all.

I am in the same situation as you, I'm opting to balance large caliber and small with a beretta .40, they are very well built, very customizable guns, as opposed to say, a glock with limited slide choices, in fact you can potentially buy one and enough kit to turn it into several different types, keep it basic, quick acting for home defense, the swap the barrel/slide, and slap a scope on it for some precision shooting, I will eventually have a .45, and a few revolvers, but after doing loads of reading and research have decided to go with a .40 to start, good stopping power, good ballistic characteristics, good versatility, there are some rounds that do one or another thing better, but it seems that this is the best all around, I'm not a big fan of 9's but I may eventually get one to shoot in my left hand (weaker hand), then I can have dual elites and play counter -terrorist!

edit: price range, the beauty of the 1911 is that it is tough as nails, you can find a good used one, like a kimber, get the same performance of brand new, for a fraction of the price

Haha, nice reference. I'm also not a fan of the 9mm too much. Reminds me of the .380 Auto too much and just not as fun I guess.

My uncles got a pretty sweet Barretta 9mm comes with laser in the hand grip this is a very accurate and reliable handgun. I also have a ruger P89 9mm and my uncle has the 45acp version. And my uncle reloads his ammo as a hobby and sell it at gun shows. The stuff that doesn't pass the test gets thrown in a bucket for the next outing. The P series handguns from ruger will shoot anything you give them and I have personally put about 5 thousand rounds through mine and it has never jammed. But as a con it is a heavy gun that has a weird feel to it when fired. So test fire one first and see if you like it.

glocks make good "beaters", low maintenance, tough, good all around design, but they will never make a match shooting pistol, nor can they be considered by any means attractive, and you have very limited finish (none) and assembly choices, they do have some odd calibers, like 10 mm's though, always wanted to try one

edit: I've never like ruger semi's for the same reason you just mentioned, they make amazing revolvers, though, for those of you with a clint eastwood streak you should try the blackhawk series, you load several cylinders and for a reload you pull another whole cylinder out of your belt, as opposed to reloading individual rounds, ala "Pale Rider"

10 milli's are actually a lot of fun I think. They're very similar to your .40, almost a bridge between the 9mm and .45. But they are fun to shoot.

The 10mm's are extremely loud me and my uncle were shooting 357 caliber through a 38 special and the guy next to us with a glock 10mm was blowing us away. Plus side is if you cant hit it sure will scare the fuck out of whoever you are shooting at. (Speaking purely in a defensive perspective)

And yeah it is the weirdest feeling gun I have ever fired. Its really soft so my wife likes it but with that gun I just seem to pull to the right and up. Don't know its just weird and heavy too.

Haha, you should have heard it last time I was at the range with my dad's Colt Anaconda. It's a .44 mag, and we definitely made 2 people leave the range because of the noise/blowback. They were shooting a .45ACP and a Five-Seven, but couldn't deal with the concussion of the .44 mag.

same here with my dad's ruger .44 superblackhawk, that wood grip does nothing for absorption, though

Grandfather has a M1911 Colt .45ACP from when he came back from WWII, was over in Europe. He also had 2 P38s that he sold like 30 years ago. Im gonna get the Colt when he dosent want it any more he says.

How is Taurus' reliability? I have seen quite a few for what seemed a lot cheaper than most autos. Maybe they were just not taken care of...

Taurus got their start by buying old toolings from S&W for their revolvers, and Beretta for their semi's, now they have reinvested in themselves making huge developements in research and developement and have become quite the respectable manufacturer, they have even developed some revolvers of surprisingly large calibers with 8 shot cylinders, though even if you find an older one you still end up with a good piece as they are basically cheap berettas and S&W's

It depends, the high-end ones run around $1000, but you get a get used Springfields (Even know some guys who got new ones) in your price range. My Auto-ordnance cost me $300 New and Rock Island sells for around there.

I guess i'll be the first to pitch in HK's good name, can't go wrong with either that or a Glock. I don't think anyone has mentioned Sig Sauer yet so there we are there. It really all depends on what type of carry piece you are looking for. First choose your caliber, and than you can start talking about ergonomics, size, etc. I personally like Glocks and HK's, my Ruger P345 has never failed me either. Practice safe, practice hard, and by all means have fun.

I love my Glock 17(9mm), but wish that I would have gone with the 40cal version. I've been told that the 45 calibers tend to have a better chance of jamming in a rapid fire situation. Obviously, with the conceal and carry, you intend to use it for protection, so keep that in mind. In the world of handguns, you really cannot go wrong with Glock, Beretta 92/96 models, or Springfield armories 1911(or various knock offs). All are worthy sidearms. It just depends on how much kick you want. If kick is a concern, you could always get a compensated barrel setup, but they typically run much higher than where your looking to purchase.

1911 .45 - Good pistol, easy to find parts for.
H&K USP .45 - Great pistol, very reliable costs a bit more.

glock 23 ( not the best looking but realiable, awesome dependable weapon)
Kimber Custom TLE II .45 ACP ( AWESOME grouping, weight, control, everything)
Colt M1991A SERIES 80 1911 ( Another one just like Kimber )
Berreta 92FS ( realible, not the higher caliber like the one above but I used for 4 years in the marines )
