Actually id say south vietnam lost the war largely due to president thieu. His opressive policies especially against the Bhuddists helped strengthen the Viet Cong and make the S.Vietnamese too small a minority to be legitimate against the North.
However typically in a war that you "lose" there are reparations concessions etc. Seeing how the nva lost 2 million and americans lost 50 thousand they were more of a mindset when the americans left of one that was "please dont come back and kick the shit out of us again"..
Theres no question from a combat perspective America hugely outperformed the ARVN and VC. The NVA deserves respect of sorts for being tough fighters willing to accept any loss. I cant quite remember the quote Westmoreland said it i believe something like if he could accept the losses the NVA did for a week the war would be over .. im probably butchering it but w/e.
