One popular science author (Bryson) wrote that the more complex life becomes, the more likely it is to become extinct.

Agreed.  The demise of the earth is unlikely this side of Christmas, but the destruction of the human race is a real possibility and more probable than most would like to believe.  But life will most liikely continue and evolve in to something else.  Well, that depends on your faith I suppose although I'm sure that won't alter the ultimate future of us and our planet.

Sorry spastic, I realize that its connection to the topic is rather tangential at best and did not realize how many had seen it already. As for the poll, I did not vote because of the wording of the possible answers.
Do I think the world will eventually come to an end, yes. Do I think that the human race will eventually die out, most probably. Do I think either will happen in our lifetimes, end of Earth, very doubtful, Human extinction, there is a slim possibility. Do I believe that the prophesied 'End of Days' will happen in our lifetimes, again highly doubtful.

Yeah Darth, I generally find the wording of poll options too limiting, and I see there are flaws in this one as well.  D'oh

To clarify, I'm talking about only the prophesied End Times in a purely Judeo-Christian (and possibly Islamic) eschatological sense.  If I had left out the "possibly in our lifetime" part, I think more people would have voted Yes, but even so, ~30% is a looooong way from statistically negligible.

It's odd so many voted that way yet none of them seem to want to comment.

Since it seems you may have voted Yes if I had left out the "possibly in our lifetime", perhaps you would like to comment on whether you think such beliefs affect your views of our species' longterm prospects?  Do you agree with the spirit of Sam Hughes' comments, above?  My apologies if I'm reading too much into your comments.

That gives us 4-5 billion years to settle outside the Solar System.  I think if it's remotely possible, that's enough time to figure it out.
personally, I think we'll just generally fail as a species long before that happens
In what sense, "fail"?  And in whose eyes?

I mean fail as in fade from existence and cease to be, I didn't intend any more ceremonious intent than that.  I just think we have too many self destructive tendencies without enough intelligence to go along with it, or enough drive for self improvement to compensate for the lack of intelligence and self destructive tendencies

This doesn't seem to be an altogether uncommon view in our culture, although the stated justifications may vary.

The open question is, how far you would go to prove yourself right, given the chance.
