The little bird is used best against infintry IMHO and for having a 3 man team run around and grab flags like no tomorrow! But if any type of armor comes along one shell from a tank will kill you. Mobile AA may be able to get you, if you are out flares. Stingers, IGLA may get you, but then u can dodge and use your mini gun to kill them before a reload.

Maybe it's my bias due to how much SF I played, but I still say the Apache is more manueverable than any recon chopper. It turns on a dime!

When I'm flyin the littlebird, I turn and the chopper doesn't even seem to respond to it for a second or two.

One of the reasons the littlebirds are so tough is their hitboxes are buggy, just like every other hitbox in the game. Add the fact that their hitbox is pretty small to begin with and you'll find that 7/8 rockets will do no damage, unless the LB is sitting still.
There are no hitboxes in BF2, It's all based on collision detection.
Which is why it can seem buggy at times
On the bright side, collision detection is WAY less exploitable.

They sure as hell sound fun, but they're no match for a skilled attack chopper team/solo-er or a jet
