Alright, first off, if you don't know anything, or hardly know anything, don't even bother reading this because you won't know the answer.

I've been playing guitar for a little over two years and did the best thing I possibly could, I got an Ibanez Jem Steve Vai edition. It goes great with my Marshall half stack and I only paid $450 for it used. However, I'm having a big problem. I need to balance out the tremolo. It has the crazy Floyd Rose Tremolo Locking system which already took me a long time to figure out. My problem is I can't balance it and I just talked to the guy who sold it to me and now I know why. The guitar is configured to 10s, but I use 9s. I love using the thin strings just for speed and I bought a box of 9s, I still have about 7 or 8 sets left so I would like to continue using my 9s. I found out the guitar was configured to 10s and that I need to get it changed to 9s. I'd rather not go get it done at some guitar shop and see if I could do it myself, does anybody know how I could possibly do it? Thank you in advance!

9's ftw, if u play lead guitar, but 10's for more rhythm play.

your trem is prob lying flat on the guitar body, as the 9's are too light to hold trem in place, so unscrew the back  plate of the guitar, usually same place where u feed strings in, and really, all u gotta do is to tighten the springs that hold the trem, to compensate for the lack of string tension.  springs are usually mounted into holes that can be adjusted, ie take spring hook out of one hole and slip it into another.

u WILL need to take off your springs, or at least loosen them to do this.

this is not a big deal with a guitar's setup.  more difficult can be the intonation setting. especially on a guitar with such a wobbly tremelo.

From the sound of it, I think it's the other way around - if it had 10's before, the springs are probably too tight and you would need to loosen them.  Be sure to do both (or all three) evenly though or you may wind up with intonation problems.

if the previous owner had 10's, then the trem would have had to have had a certain amount of tension set by the springs to hold the trem flat.  if he put nines on, then the trem would be pulling against a lesser force, so the trem would pull more than the strings, so the trem would be lying flat on the body. trem wins the tug of war

if he put 11's on, then the trem would float up, cuz the strings would be pulling the trem off its neutral.
