A deal has been reached and the U.S. will retain control of the internet. An international forum will be created, called the Internet Governance Forum, to give other countries a way to voice their concerns and a stronger say in how the internet works.
U.S. officials said early Wednesday that instead of transferring management of the system to an international body such as the United Nations, an international forum would be created to address concerns. The forum, however, would have no binding authority.

OMG... Next thing will be that all our unused processor time will be used for the intelligent design of the Star Wars project 2... Please someone hack into their office and take over control... Whoops... Maybe they're tracing me already...

I'm just curious.. did any of you even READ the artical? Do you even know what they are talking about? Do you even know the history of the internet?

Just because ICAAN will continue to retain control over the DNS system, or the address system they are talking about, doesn't mean the USA owns the internet. Jesus.

ICAAN has always maintained control over most of the DNS servers, and it makes sense that they continue to do so.

Infact, this story is quite old, there was alot of talk along time ago about how the United States was in control because of the internets vast dependancy of text based addresses.

For those of you who don't know anything about DNS, there are somewhere around 20 or around that number, primary DNS servers, which hold domain names and their corrosponding name servers, ie, ip addresses.

Now obviously, these computers can't handle billions of DNS requests each time someone types in a web site name or something.. so each internet service provider has a local cache of these domain names on their own computers.

Every 24 to 72 hours, the ISP's download the lists from the primaries, and the smaller local ISP's, as in, your own isp, downloads it from the backbone isp's.

In this way, the load on the servers is eliminated. Everytime a domain is registered, it gets stored on ICAAN's dns servers.

Thats just the way it works. If you know your internet history, you'll see how in it's infancy, the internet was previously part of the U.S Military network. As it grew, they realized the problem concerning domain names. And that's just the way things happened.

No one actually owns the internet, it's a global network of machines, unfortunately, there's no real solution to the DNS problem of a group 'owning' the actual hardware and maintaining a vital part of it's inner working.

The organization that maintains the DNS system isn't even part of the U.S government. It's a non profit organization and so far they've been doing a decent job. There's no way the United States is going to to start severly regulating how it works because they'd face some serious problems trying to make everyone happy.

This has nothing to do with restricting porn, or anything for that matter, they couldn't even if they wanted, they have no control over anything outside the country. Thats why most illegal porn is stored in servers in Amsterdam for instance. The U.S wouldn't want to bother tracking down everyone viewing it, they'd want to stop it at its source by shutting down the owners, and they can't because its outside their jurisdiction.

So I'll say again, you should learn to read before you start saying crap like "OMGWTF US OWNS INTERNET NAO? WTF DIE AMERICANS!" "OH NO THEY WONT ALLOW PORN ANYMORE NEED TO MOVE TO EUROPE! HALP"

Seriously, goodbye internet? Hardly.

I didn't see that very last line at first. But leave it to the media to leave out the meat and potatos of why.

And as for the talk about the billions of poorest people being left out, I think they are refuring to the cost associated with registering a top level domain, like something.com, com being the country name, as in .br or .uk

I don't know really. But if they're so poor, what kind of significant economic contribution would they be giving even if they had one? It costs pretty much the same anywhere to run machines to host content anyway even if they had all the domain name crap to use.

And the real costs they'd be paying has really nothing to do with ICAAN anyway. Kind of misleading, but then again I didn't really look into it.

Dude, this section of the forums is meant for mature discussions and we don't need your little 12 year old attitude here. Not only that, your post has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Keep it up and I'm pretty sure one of the mods will have you removed from posting in these parts of the forums.

Same goes with the dude who posted the question mark.

Dont say, goodbye inet. There is nothing about owning and stuff. Its about control, so its easier to track some "suspects". And even if someone would take control over all inet he/she cant because it will cause new world revolution and economic crisis. + HACKERS WILL NOT MAKE THIS HAPPEN. So, relax. And I'm sure it will be a looooong time before they will start doing something...

Although I believe the threat of what the article implies is minor, if not non-existent... I am pretty sure the authorities are already using all possible internet information. Here in Belgium we just recently had an interesting story:

A guy was convicted after killing his wife, by breaking her neck. The murder was connected to him after finding following search-items in google: "neck" and "breaking". He apparently was googling to find a way to eliminate his wife.

Now it was used in the past tense... But I'll bet the police will be eager to know this by forehand. Don’t be to convinced that the authorities will keep on bunny hoping after all possible internet tools… One day they’ll discover that the wealth of information can actually be used to fight crime. But than again, they most probably discover it after everybody else has already found something new to tinker with.

So, at the end we will only discover where the cyber-waves are bringing us after it crashes on the beach… Hmmm beach… I wish I was…

Cheers,
R

Ps.: And no, I do not know how stupid you have to be for googling for a how-to-effectively-kill-my-wife-in-three-steps guide, and NO! this does not indicate something about the average Belgian (or does it?).

Thank you Ryan for educating the masses. This whole issue was so blown out of proportion by reports who don't have a gah'damn clue it's rediculous. Your post more than covers this. Thread closed.
