Yes, you can call a British person a Brit, becuase that's not offensive
by definition. It may not have been intended as an insult, just because you didn't know what it actually meant. Let me put it clearly for you: Call a black guy a nigger, then say "It wasn't intended as an insult!". I don't think he's going to care.
