So, what's up with Torrents?

I've read a few threads that have made reference to it and did my own google search and have a pretty darn good idea what it is all about now.
My question is, there are a bunch of *torrent* variations, so what is the common one or which one do you...err...your friends use?

i.e. Bittorrents, UseNext, Torrentz, etc.
