Yeah, I kinda screwed up there, pretty badly.
Not sure how I nroke punBB but it seems the fix was to break it further cos I was assured by the support forums that my fix wouldn't work.

props and grats to the guy on the bf2s irc channel who provided me with 'my fix' even though he then went on to say it was whong and should be something else (which didn't work).

To sum up:
I broke it
I asked about
I got an answer that worked
everyone was baffled

I don't know much about this duffry but I can tell you one thing - he is good at Photoshop!
