this is random but yea, why are the bike chain and gears always on the right side is there some mechanical advantage to it or do they do it just cuz? that one has me baffled
I think it has to do with polarity give things a natural twist in one direction. Like its twisting righthanded and that works better the the direction of torque required to drive the rear wheel, with the gear box/drive shaft being on one side.
Reverse the polarity and the side of the chain drive and it would go fast in reverse. No?

probably another one of those millions of apparently insignificant things that have to do with most people being right handed........
interesting note:
buttons were applied to daily apparel on a broad scale for the first time in the victorian era, a notoriously chauvenistic period, most mens shirts still have the buttons positioned so as to be more easily undone by a right handed male, most women's shirts still have the buttons postioned just the opposite way.....so as to be more easily undone by a right handed male....
I know the fact that I know this is ridiculous, I am a font of useless trivia

And why are all motorcycle drive mechanisms (chain, shaft, belt) on the LEFT side?
Buttons My 12 year old daughter asked me why the buttons were the way they are. I ain't telling her THAT!

It's to counter the torque of the engine. I think. I remember seeing some thing to that effect once.Kaosdad008 wrote:

Rotation of the engine has a lot to do with it if I can remember right.
because in most countries (the ones where you drive on the right side of the road) you have to turn tighter to make a right hand turn through an intersection, as opposed to the broader sweep left? not sure but this would lessen the likelyhood of one of those belt drives or even some of the chain drives dragging, I'm a fan of shaft drives myselfKaosdad008 wrote:

Bike gears aren't nessisarly on the right hand side. They can be on the left, just international standard have put them on the right. Otherwise, you'd have to have disc mounts and gear hangers on both sides of the bike.
