.ape? never heard of it, gimme a link to a sample and i'll check it out.
What i just find disappointing is that most people think all VLC can do is play stuff. It can convert, encode/decode, virtually any format to anything else. And then people go complaining about a .wav -> .mp3 or something.
APE is a lossless audio compression format, there is also FLAC, plus I think there is also Microsoft and Apple equivalents too.
I think either APE or FLAC offer the best lossless compression, it's probably ape.
EDIT: I did for a while start archiving a lot of my cd's in APE format, but then I got a new MP3 player that could play FLAC files. (Cowon iAudio M3L, excellent mp3 player btw.. 20GB and 35 hour battery life)
However, that couldn't play the files at their maximum compression plus those files would eat into its 20GB pretty quickly so I decided for q0 VBR MP3's.
