It's entirely possible.  They don't look hugely rich, and it seems the poorer someone is the more likely they are to go extremist.  I believe the correct term would be "don't judge a book by it's cover".  And the FBI doesn't seem quite so.....propaganda driven as, say, the Department of Homeland Security.

I think it is funny that in the AP press release that was on my ISP's home page, link here.  They say that the group were studying the Bible, then state that they practiced Islam.  From what I understand about Islam, the Bible is not true and should not be studied.  Guess that is the media in the US, always contradicting themselves.

The indictment accuses the seven men of swearing an oath of loyalty to al Qaeda, Besides Batiste, the indictment names Patrick Abraham, Stanley Phanor, Naudimar Herrera, Burson Augustin, Lyglenson Lemorin and Rotschild Augustine.

Now I can belive they swore a oath to some street gang... yes.

You are correct in that the religion of Islam says that Jesus is a prophet, but  Mohammad  stated  that the Bible does not show the true character of Jesus.  The Christians tainted the real Jesus's character, message, and word in the Bible, so the Bible is a book of lies according to Mohammad, so it should not be studied.

In Christianity, Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy, in Islam he is the second greatest prophet in all of history with Mohammad being the first.

To obtain money and support for their mission, the conspirators sought help from al-Qaida, pledged an oath to the terrorist organization and supported an al-Qaida plot to destroy FBI buildings, the four-count indictment charged.

He is putting these people in the same class... Maybe not directly but in a round about way.

Honestly if I seen these people snooping around the sears tower I think people would react just worrying about being mugged let alone them creating some sophisticated explosive device to take down a building.

Agree, the article states they were attempting to get in contact with Al Qaeda. That is how they got caught. An FBI agent that had infiltrated Al Qaeda was their contact.

Regardless of what their inspiration was, if these facts are correct, then they are indicted for connections with al Qaeda.

I just read through everything I could find about this case on the web, including the official court inditment and evidence.
Firstly I can bet if these dudes had met a real hight ranking member of al Qaeda he would have told them to go away. These guys are obviously street punks seeking solace in religion of some kind, what kind its still not known. They requested military boots and clothes. They want to play solider. A successful terrorist blends in, wears what everyone else wears. al Qaeda would not risk an opperation and the risk of these guys spilling their guts in a questioning room when they can't go through with it. These guys involved would feck it up for all of them.
The whole thing sounds like a FBI sting op. They asked for army boots clothes guns and money. The handler gave them boots and a camera and asked them to pick targets and take pictures and video and bring it back to him, which they did. This proves intent and allows it to got to court.

Truth is ,unless more evidence surfaces, we will never know what would have happened. Personally I think even if these guys got the guns and money, they would have just disappeared or might not even have went through with it. Then again they might have.They just don't fit the profile of someone willing to lay down their own lives for a religious cause.

I know a terrorist a bit. He was/is one of the nicest ppl you would ever know, grannies loved him and hes the kind of person your mum would like to see your little sister take home. Well manored, quite and friendly. He blew up 2 part time police reservist's in their car in the carpark behind were I used to work 12 years ago.  He is out of jail now and I see him on the streets regularly. He looks more normal than most people.  These guys looked like dillusional black under classes who are seaking a way to get back at the big bad white man run government, but have pushed to far. Can they get the chair for this?

JahManRed: I agree with your point that this group would never have been succesful in "joining" Al Qaeda. However they did attempt to contact Al Qaeda which, if true, would be pretty serious in the US. As long as they thought the FBI agent was an actual Al Qaeda member, than the idictment can hold its ground.
