The Army Corps of Engineers reported that the levees will be just as good as they were last year.

Wasn't that the problem?

Yeah that was the problem, so I guess my advice would be to avoid the area for a while...

Also rebuilding is slow because a lot of people can't afford to fix their homes and many insurance companies are skipping out on people....and the government can only do so much (although Im not saying they did or did not do enough, I dont feel like arguing poltics right now)

Just a guess, but maybe it's that a lot of what was destroyed belonged to the poor who don't have the money to rebuild.

I have a friend in Fort Worth, TX, and here are some things she's told me:
-After the FEMA checks started getting issued, lowend jewelry stores (Wal-Mart etc) were sold out of jewelry in days.
-Same thing happened with high-end electronics.  Mind you...most of these folks are living in hotels at the time.
-Evacuees are not looking for jobs, and not moving back to NO.  They are staying in other cities and fighting for more money from FEMA and the city, and many interviewed by local news are not even looking for jobs.

In addition to this, you've got people whose homes weren't destroyed that are now moving out of the NO area.  Reasoning I've heard from folks actually doing this range from fear of a future disaster to them disliking the fact that low income housing and crime is on the rise in the unflooded areas, making it a place they don't want to live or raise a family.

cuz NO is filled with a bunch of freeloading whores, at least it was til they were evac'd and now they are everyone else's freeloading whores, they spent decades building a society reliant on welfare and money generated by the self sufficient segments of the population that vacationed there every mardi gras and all they're going to do is sit and bitch and moan about how it's someone else's job as opposed to doing it themselves like Miami does, I know I keep referencing Miami in concern to this subject but as I used to live there it's what I know

BTW Miami is still rebuilding from all 5 of the hurricanes that hit it last year, and you don't hear them bitching

WHAT ^^ Said..

Spent a lot of time in NO, not by choice though usually ferrying Air Force Special Operations Helicopters to Florida from California and back. Bourbon Street was cool once you could get over the smell of Urine and Vomit that was everywhere, The river walk area and shopping mall was cool.. but MAN.. once you get out of those areas NO was a VERY SCARY place. Got lost a few times driving from Lakefront Airport to Bourbon street, and lemme tell you the detour was not a nice one. It is horrible what happened to the city and the residents, but they had plenty of warning to get out and the state and local government did little to nothing to help THEIR OWN people. The federal Government and FEMA specifically is not a first responder and for fucks sake the FED is not an insurance company.. There was a huge entitlement mentality in that city, and I am sure it has followed the evacuees where they landed.

Yes, but they were kinda PREPARED for five hurricanes. NO wasn't.

And go down there and talk to some people before you make smears like that.

Would that be because its mostly poor black people who are suffering the most? Id hazard a guess and say you are white and well off and you and your white buddies who go down their once a year to chuck beads, drink and support all those freeloading black ppl for the entire year out of your money spent over a weekend. After this courtesy surely the poor ppl who now have no homes, jobs or future to look forward should shut up because its making you white rich types uncomfortable. Judging by what you just said, what you have as your sig and the fact you think the city is full of "whores and freeloaders", id say your racism is quite apparent. At least learn to cover IT up abit.

Another reason for the horribly slow rebuild is the corruption going on (IMAGINE THAT!).  There are multiple layers of contractors doing the simplest of tasks, flks taking the cash & running, and the insurance companies are being very slow to pay out.  All in all it's just a huge mess that started several hundred years ago when some numb-nutz decided we could build a city below sea level.

They should just level the place, backfill it so it's above sea level, and build a new infrastructure.

That very idea was discussed in the DC area for about a day.  Basically turning NO in to "America's Land Fill" for the next few decades.  Once it was at an acceptable level, returning to rebuild.  The idea was called "heartless" and dropped.

I thought it was because the ruined areas are well below sea level, building there in the first place was reckless and tempting fate. If you had ever be To NOLA you would have climbed the levee and said

" WTF ? this is not cool at all "

Everyone knew it would happen sooner or later, The bigger fear was always  that a Levee would fail north of the Affafalachia [SP] locks, Why terrorists didn't do it themselves one long holiday weekend I will never know.

Agreed but you must add ( at night ) Even the hotel told us. Enjoy the Architecture of these areas but leave well before night fall.

I loved this Because I had a Total liberal girlfriend at the Time, so I was like
" Whats wrong? Don't you enjoy the diversity, Lets see what this club is like, Wait lets walk through this area first. "

lol What a hypocrite she was when her own Ass was on the line. I dumped her after that. Man she was Hot. She was in Sports illustrated as an Down hill Skier. Came from a very wealthy family. Not very in touch with Reality though.

From what I understand they knew about the storm 40 years ago . 40 years . They didn't do a damn thing in preparation . But they were smart enough to build a football stadium for $650 million . They didn't make sure the levees would work , they didn't mobilize the national guard , they didn't have any plan what so ever . Most people who got gov checks out of the deal bought porn , jewelry , electronics and one guy even got a sex change operation . Why should we help them any more ?

has it ever occured to you that alot of people work for money, and worked hard to get it?  and there are people in NO that worked hard, and try to work hard some more after the hurricane?  but there are also people that do not work hard, yes, even in NO, and those are the people that he might have been talking about? the people that expect everything to be handed to them by the government?

People do not change.  If the person is not making an attempt to get a job and make ends meet while navigating the red tape of the insurance companies to get their money, then they were probably not working in the first place.

Just a side note.  I was at a rest stop in Ohio when a bus full from NO showed up.  A woman and her little girl were sitting on the step out front shaking like they were freezing (it was 75 degrees and sunny).  I go the the restroom and come back and start to look at the state map so see how far I have left on my trip.  The same lady walks up and stares at the map of Ohio for about 2 minutes and then asked me where NO was on the map.  That scared me because she is going to end up milking someone elses wellfare.
