I'm not too sure what the rules here are...I've never heard of anyone being arrested or given a ticket for it...look both ways, make sure that you're not gonna get hit, or if its busy just use the pedestrian crossing.

As I understand, Americans call a footpath a sidewalk, if thats the case then crosswalk makes more sense.

Here (UK) they just put metal barriers up along the center of the road when they want you to use the crossing.  People just jump them though.... and why shouldn't they?  In cities, cars should wait for people, not the other way round.  I think they should paint the whole road as zebra crossing.  I'm pretty sure It's illegal to walk (or cycle) along motorways though, which makes sense.

For anybody who doesn't like using "crosswalks" why not try the sewers? <--- Merely a suggestion

I'd heard the term "jaywalking" before and naively assumed it was just someone who didn't look left and right when they crossed the road.  However, a friend of mine, who has just come back from the States, told me that they were nearly arrested because they simply crossed the road and ended up having to get a taxi to drive them to the other side!

Someone please tell me this is a joke!  Do you actually have laws preventing you from crossing the road and if so, how fucked up is that?  You can go and buy a gun but if the gun shop's on the other side of the road, you could get arrested? Surely there's some weird thinking behind that.

Why can't you just teach people to look both ways before crossing?
Jaywalking isn't a friggin felony, or even a misdemeanor worthy of arrest. If your friends were gonna be arrested, it's probably because they were being asses to the cops.

The Jaywalking laws are defined by each city/local in the US, its not national law.   I grew up in a city where pedestrians always get the right of way.  It was kind of annoying sometimes cause the stupid tourists would stand in the middle of the road.

Can the sewer-dweller who gave me negative karma without a reason please own up. Or are you a cowardly rat?

its called a fucking crosswalk. christ. its not hard to see. its by the big lights, you know, the ones that tell you to stop and go? the parallel fucking lines on the ground? cross in those. fuck.
They're called cars, they're not hard to see. They're big, have lights (usually catches rabbits out that one) and usually have 4 wheels....just cross when one of those isn't coming in either direction. fuck
If they are so easy to see, and this is all so common sense, then why are there fences forcing you to cross in the zebra crossing at any busy intersection in the UK?

I have NEVER seen anyone get ticketed for jaywalking, so it's not like jackbooted thugs haul you off to jail whenever you don't cross properly.  Furthermore, even if you are ticketed, it is a $5 ticket or something...make a parking ticket look serious by comparison.

More importantly, why are you making such a big deal about such a little thing?  People have different ways of dealing with the same issue; but of course some clown has to say, 'your way is stupid, our way is better.'  Give it a rest...it's just different.

I've never seen nor known someone that has gotten a jaywalking ticket. Its just like in some states, certain things are illegal. Like, in some southern state, its illegal for unmarried people to have sex, but does that stop them? Is that law "real"? Nope.

I dont know what the big deal is, if there is light traffic I will walk through the middle of the street.  If there is heavy traffic I walk at the cross walks.  OMFG! I need to walk for 1 more minute!!  Why aren't many Europeans fat when they complain about a dumbass rule like this...

Not here in Boston, MA. I've jaywalked in front of cops all the time, nobody really cares. I've done it in downtown New York and the drivers get angry because they're obviously the most impatient people in the world, but I haven't gotten in trouble for it. I did hear that in Seattle that you do get in trouble for it, but I doubt the source I heard that from.

I myself have never crossed a road, they can be very testy when crossed, and once angered are very difficult to placate
