the injuns just want their welfare/injun checks like the other libs.  If they really wanted the non-US good life they would move to Mexico.  Thats what became of injuns that kept their land.  Yeah, so much better and less corrupt huh.

Use your gov. check to buy yourself a clue.

Wasn't that about 150 to 200 years ago.  Big difference between THEN and NOW.  We still had too much European blood in our veins at the time.  After all it was the Europeans that made the Native Americans Savages the day they founded the colony of Jamestown.

How do you spell "aboriginee"?
I should also add that there was segregation in the US up until 1956...
Segregation exists everywhere (religious, cultural, etc), today. News flash.

First of all, Major_Spittle, I think you missed a few key lessons on history. Now, do you even know the full significance of the word "Nazi"? You think someone who is proud of their heritage deserves the label "Nazi"? Give me a few valid reasons why anything he said can be construed as "Nazi". By looking at your posts, I can see you are just a typical uneducated and slovenly bigot that feels they can throw a few words like "Nazi" around and elicit a response. This forum is intended for people who can make valid points, not mouth off like a bunch of high school jocks talking about who has the bigger dick.

Xietsu, i think the point your are trying to make about being absorbed into "american" society needs a little further explaining. I think that, personally, "american" culture is not a single one, but many hundreds and thousands of cultures put into one chunk of land where they can mingle, or not, and everyone is respectful of other peoples cultures and how they wish to celebrate it, although, sadly that isn't often the case.

basically, i understand what you are saying of basically giving it up, moving to the big city, getting a high paying job somewhere, but that isn't the point of american indian culture. I think that many of them who live in or near the reservations do so to hold onto their culture, something that i would image being difficult to hold onto in a big city like, say chicago, where i doubt they would ever run into another american indian walking around on the streets. why do you think there are places like "chinatown", or other sections of towns where everyone of the same race/culture live together.... i think it is to help preserve their culture, which is exactly why so many american indians are living on the reservations still, or nearby....to preserve a rapidly diminishing culture.

sad that one day there will probably be very few american indians that celebrate their culture in the way it was meant to be done, i find it a very colorful one. thanks bahiti for the info, i appreciate the first-person perspective

Thank you!!  Being American Indian I feel that my people are still being persecuted to this day.  Every other nation that has come to this country has been free to do what they wish but yet there are reservations that the Bureau of Indian Affairs are suppose to be taking care of and they don't.  There are Navajo reservations that have no running water.  Lakota reservations where the elders die of cold in the winters.  All because the BIA doesn't do their job!  Up until the Freedom of Religion act (1976 I believe) the American Indian couldn't even speak their own language or perform their own ceremonies without the possibility of being put in jail.  Whereas all other peoples from various countries had all the freedom they wanted.  It wasn't even until the early-mid 1900's that we were even recognized as "American" citizens.  Now that is racism.
Everything I have said about Native Americans sounds to you just how the BS blame America rhetoric from you sounds to everyone else.  You are an embarassment to Native Americans.  America has done nothing to YOU and has provided you with opportunities not afforded to most other people in this country.  Yet you still bitch and complain, you are the problem just like the many other Native Americans that sit on reservations cashing government checks to support their drug habits and destroying their OWN culture.

The US Government has never given me anything.  I had no reservation to live on as it was dissolved many many years ago.  I have made my own way in my life with no help for the welfare system, my nation, or my family (other than moral support).  I have never received any monies from this government.  I have a well paid job and my degree is in Graphics Design and Web Design.  I hold two of them and am working on my Business degree.  All of this I have done with my own money.  My husband doesn't even pay for me to go to school as it was something that I wanted to do on my own.

What opportunities have been afforded to me by the government?  None.  As I said, I do not live on a reservation and I do not receive a government check.  Never have.  And not all American Indians have drug problems.  Do not stereotype my (and yours) people.  All races have their problems with alcohol and drugs.

I can complain all I want.  When I see what is being done to the NA and the government just turns a blind eye then it pisses me off! comet241, I think it is really irrelevant that they are trying to uphold their traditions. As you cited, other cultures have done the same thing--they don't need entire societal segregation in order to do this, as the entire ordeal just incites more grief than gain. Who is to say they couldn't incorporate together? And no, I'm making the indication that they "move to the city"; there are loads of suburban communities just awaiting advancement and development (New York ain't yer ownlei awpshun).

Why do you think the government has to fix the problems the NA have????  WTF, maybe If people like you would stop looking at NAs as helpless victims and making excuses, NA would fix their own problems.

The biggest problems I have seen facing people is that their families are broken, they have no pride, they have no expectations in life, they have no drive to do anything, and they are taught that they are somehow different and better then the people off the reservation.

The only thing you are right about is that all of the things I just listed are caused by the government.  If you stay on the reservation you don't have to do anything but collect money and let someone else take care of you. No responsibility for yourself at all.  This is not just a problem for NAs on Reservations but in all of America...  Have a drug problem, the government will help you.  Don't want to work, the government will pay you.  Got knocked up at 14 and don't want to live by your parents rules, the government will be your parents, childs daddy, church, and job all rolled into one.

I have a problem with anyone that feels the government OWES them something and will not help themselves.  And I am sorry to have offended you, but I don't like our people portrayed as the "poor old victims that can't do anything for themselves".  That is not who I am, but those who live that life and spout that sickness seem to be the only ones heard.

How is it irrelevant?  Why can we not uphold our traditions when others can?  Even though I do not live on a reservation that my nation doesn't even have does not mean that I can not uphold the traditions that they have passed down to me.  My family has not lived on a reservation since shortly after the Oklahoma territory was opened up to the settlers.  Our reservation was divided up to the heads of family. All we have is a Tribal Headquarters.  Can't live there.  Now I am not saying that some people don't need to get off the rez and live away from the government but what about the elders?  They can't go and make a way of life for themselves as they are elderly and have more than likely lived on the rez their entire life.  That doesn't make them any less a person than me or anyone else.  I have a close friend that lives on Pine Ridge.  She once told me that they receive monies for staying on the rez but yet there is no life there so if they leave the rez then they lose their money.  It's a catch 22.  Damned if you do and damned if you don't.  Much like some people, not American Indians, that live on welfare.  If they come off the welfare then they risk losing their house, food, children, but if they stay on welfare then they can't make a better life.  I know a few people that receive food stamps and free or low cost medical and they try so hard but can never get out of the system.

It's not just one race of people that have problems.  It's all races.  And all races should be proud of their heritage.  All races should be allowed their traditions and stand up for what they believe in.

I give up. Agree or don't I don't care.  I just will not stand by and let someone bash my heritage.  If I did then I would not be who I am today.

But I do not look at our people as helpless victims.  Everyone makes their own way in life.  The government caused the reservations in the first place.  They just didn't uphold their end of the treaty.  Not saying that some tribes abided by the treaties themselves.  Not all the blame goes to the government but they need to share in the responsibility.

I don't feel the government owes me anything and I will never ask them for anything.

And I do agree that it is not just the reservations and that it is all of the country.  But then too it is not just our country.

And yes the ones that do live on the rez and start spouting off seem to be the only ones heard, hell look at AIM.  But it is also people like us that live off the rez, that have made their own way in life without help from others, that need to stand up and fight for our people and maybe just maybe someone will hear.  I know dozens of NDS that wish they could come off the rez but are afraid.  It's those that need to be shown that there is a world out here.  Granted it is a cold and harsh world but it is our world and you have to prove to yourself that you can do it.

Apology is accepted Kola and I do apologize to you.  I just can't stand to hear negativity being thrown at our people.

It's irrelevant because it hinders your situation for integration into the modern world. Who the hell is to say you can't continue your practices after all is said and done? How have you run your life so that you have been able to accomplish what you have? Why couldn't anyone of these Native Americans? It comes down to innate, genetic, drive. Apparently you have it, apparently your others don't. I like Page 2.

Why trust apportionment of a federal construct that has mishandled you in the past? I would think that there be no need for segregation on such a scale, and that inclusion into mainstream society would have been made (say, on a larger scale than what has occurred).

You're lumping thousands upon thousands of people into one category.  Not all American Indians are on reservations with no desires.  We all have desires in life.  Some of us are just given better opportunities in life.  The same with all people.  It doesn't necessarily come down to innate, genetic drive.  Sometimes it just comes down to money and the door being opened for you.  If a person constantly has a door slammed in their face then they will stop trying to open that door.  The same of all people.  It's not a cultural thing.  It's a human race thing.  Some people will always think that they are better than another.  Whether they are or not.  It comes down to being strong enough to take a stand and say to the world that you are here and you aren't going away.  Not all people can do that.  Some American Indians choose to stay on tribal lands because they can.  Because if it is not being used then it will be taken away.  Those lands belong to Creator and the American Indians were the caretakers.  Then along comes the other people and they start eying the land and seeing what it was they could do with it.  Some of it was good and some of it was bad.  Some of it is still good and lots is still bad.  Mother Earth has so many scars on her surface and below the surface that She will never heal.  If we do not take care of what was given to us then She will not be able to take of us.  The American Indian people have always tried to live in peace with our surroundings.  But it is not always possible.  We were forced to fight and fight we did.  No different than any other race or country.

For centuries different people have come to a new land and have tried to "assimilate" the residents and make them live like they have.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  Sometimes it is for the good and sometimes not.

I for one choose to live my life like Creator tells me to.  I work hard, go to school, take care of my husband and spoil my grandchildren.  My goal in life:  To sit back and tell my grandchildren about their heritage and teach them to be proud of they are but to always make their own way in life and not rely on others to do it for them.  That is what I was taught.

You asked how I have run my life so that I was able to accomplish what I have?  I didn't grow up on a reservation so to speak.  Not an American Indian one anyway.  I grew up Marine Corps.  My father was a gunnery sergeant in the Corps.  He instilled drive into my very being and taught me to stand up for what I believe in.  He taught me to be strong and to always work hard for what I want.  He taught me to be beaten down by other people and to always speak the truth.  That is how I have done what I have done with my life.

I throw my hands up in dispair.  You are a poor example of an American Indian.  If indeed you truely are one.  I give up on you and this thread.

Let's whip 'em out and get that out of the way.

Probably a dumb question but I'd like someone to clarify this (I don't feel like Googling this right now) - are the Native American nations actually part of the United States or a separate nation/quasi-independent?  I always believed the Nations to be somewhat autonomous.

I can clarify "autonomous" if needed, even if I can't spell it.
