Come to the NT, 16 with parental permission/in private (can't purchase though), 18 on licenced premises.... Nobody follows these laws though, most people start at about 12-15 in my hometown and where I currently live... Friggin drunks.... .....

UK.

To buy alcohol you need to be 18 - that's any strength, any type.

To drink alcohol, the only restriction is in licensed premises - bars, pubs, restaurants, etc. - and is again 18.  However, if you're at home and your parents want to share a bottle of wine/whatever, this is legal at any age.  But an adult cannot buy alcohol for anyone under 18 for it to be consumed on licensed premises.

17 is the legal age for driving and joining the armed forces.  However, there's an unwritten (I think) rule about not being allowed to serve in a conflict before 18 - that included Northern Ireland last time I checked.
