Nobody brought up tennis either....why's that? I thought that was popular across the pond too.

I guess not when the Williams sisters are Americans and dominate the sport for a few years. Along with Sampras and Agassi....weird.

Isn't Wimbledon in London? Strawberries and cream? Pete Sampras dominates the sport for 6 years? More strawberries and cream?

I bet that got old pretty quick.

Man, no doubt. I don't watch a lot of football/soccer as I said. But I've actually seen some high scoring games in the times I've watched it.

I have nothing bad to say about that sport, unlike many other people seem to for reasons they can't really justify or explain with any clarity.

Not to mention....screw John Madden....whatever the guy's name is that screams GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

for what....twenty five minutes or something? Is by far the best sports commentator on the planet. I'd watch a match just waiting in anticipation for him to start screaming.

Anyways my opinion on this is don't be such a biased asshole. Don't try to group all of american sports together and shoot them down in such an uneducated and pathetic way.... nvm i'm just gonna stop before I get way to involved in this.

Good day to you!
What a crap site.  It screams of jelousy and hate because for once America doesn't take interest in something that is clearly the biggest and most popular sport in the World.  It only proves to me the "small man" syndrome that some yanks have when what they do isn't the best.

Besides, I liked this letter written to the site (by an American) and I am suprised he posted it on his site because it totally proves him wrong....

"I took a trip to England to see what the hype is all about, and I must say: Go to a game at St. James' Park in Newcastle, England. I have been to one Super Bowl, countless playoff games at Yankee Stadium, and one Knicks playoff game at the Garden. Point blank: They don't come close to the intesity and passion at Newcastle. The fans are relentless, its ear-popping loud, and just an overall amazing experience. So, go on little boy, spend some coin, and see a game in Newcastle. Oh, and make sure you root root root for the home team or else you will get a bottle crashed on your head."

Very right Esteban.

Let me say something here about the OP. I'd like to clarify it a bit for the poster himself. Rather than just saying "Why are they so shit?" try coming up with an actual question that can yield quantitative results rather than asking a question based purely on opinion.

If you'd like to have some insight as to why American sports aren't as highly viewed or played around the world, I'd be happy to give you my view of it here:

American PROFESSIONAL sports are an entertainment industry, same as international PROFESSIONAL sports. However, overseas, much more of the "sport" itself is glorified. Fans are behind their teams because their teams represent where they're from. Do the Dallas Cowboys really invoke patriotism and identity with the residents of Dallas? Maybe a few, but not a majority for certain. Sport in engrained into the lives of people in (and I hate to use the term but bear with me) lower class countries. Places where your goal in life isn't to have the new year's Mercedes three weeks before your neighbor does. That's where pride comes from largely here in the States, money and affluence. In a place where those things will never be available to you, what you have to be proud of is where you're from. And your country's professional team actually does that there. They're not in rehab, they're not arrested....AGAIN....and they're not rated based more on what super model they're currently dating than their skill in their respective sport.

It's all about marketing. Sports in the United States are sold to people who live here because many people have a lot of money to waste on it. The funny thing is, for our dollar, our products don't mean a damn thing to us either. I believe it was EstebanRey who mentioned the 1 billion Beckham jersey sales. That's a staggering number. I'd be shocked if there were that many jerseys sold for any player in any US sport. And what's even more astounding, is that I bet each one of those people still wears that jersey (barring something freak happening to it). How many jerseys do I have from the past that I never wear anymore because the player got sold to another team, or he ****ed up and got sent to prison, or got shot by a rapper? Probably about twelve.

From what I know, we don't really advertise the NFL in Zimbabwe very much. Our target audience there doesn't have the money to keep up with buying a new Daunte Culpepper jersey every time he's traded from here on out, so it's not convenient or profitable. Therefore we don't care, therefore they don't care either.

north americans big shots views on sports is fun.

for example, after they lost world cup in baseball against mexico (?) they big shots wante to "disband" that event.

when Sweden won the Olympic games of icehockey the big shots wanted NHL to keep runnin thru the olympics.

is this a fact, if the U.S/Canada cant wint something then they just wanna kill it off?

im not sayin this goes for the average Joe, but for the ones calling the shots in north american sports.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised Sarnath.

I mean to be fair, the Olympics has been politicized since the Cold War.

And the US sent in its professionals to the basketball competitions after the team was very, VERY suspiciously defeated after some ridiculously questionable moves by the overseas officials.

So yes, I'm comfortable saying that there's a serious degree of politics involved in sports here, and they represent more than the players themselves.

Also, money comes into play. If our big shots have their teams destroyed by foreign teams that are supposed to lose to us, that may hurt ticket sales in their normal season games which would be bad for the "companies".

To be honest that figure wasn't accurate.  I was basing it on the huge Asian markets that the World's biggest clubs are trying to tap into.  David Beckham was at Man Utd and they're were the richest club team and then he goes to Madrid and suddenly Madrid become the richest.  I don't know how many shirts Real Madrid sold but they must have sold a hell of a lot to be Utd when they did..

Which makes me think, Not made the point about selling the Sport to countries that could afford to buy merchandise and I'm suprised the NFL isn't be sold to Asia (especially China) at the mo' as their economy is rising sooooooo fast that there is even talk about them over taking America is decades to come...

Exaggeration or not, I'm still sure that a Beckham jersey has outsold any NFL, NBA, or NHL jersey in history. It has more global appeal and there's just no denying that. Sticking to the statistics and moving away from the personal preferences is the only way to see an issue like this clearly.

As far as the NFL being packaged and sold to Asia...why the hell not? I've seen some things that people buy in Japan....and being of puritan yankee blood, I have to say I blushed. If they buy used women's panties in plastic bags, why wouldn't they buy into American Football if we tried hard enough?

All jokes aside I just don't think there's really a market for American Football anywhere other than America. Yes, I know about the World League....but be serious, that's not the NFL in terms of popularity or the level of competition. I'm sure quite a few Division One college teams would embarrass a lot of the World League.

Reasons for this? Lord only knows. But if I had to guess I'd say quite a lot of it comes from the rampant stereotypes about American Football and the constant comparisons to what the rest of the world refers to as "Real Football". Any one of you from Europe can answer this for me...Don't you feel, even if just a little bit, pissed off that there's a sport that the rest of the entire world calls "Football" and is played with...get this, the feet...and one country decides to call their sport the same thing? It's a ridiculous thing to get worked up about, but for one reason or another, it truly strikes a nerve.

So I think the main reason our "Football" is so stuck in this country is because the rest of the world's population feels a little bit slighted by the game and our use of the name, and therefore just resists it based on principles rather than the quality of the game itself. And being that, population wise, the rest of the world sure does beat the US I don't see that changing.

im not too bothered what they call it, just gets confusing sometimes, not knowing which one someone is talking about, tbh why did they call it football part from the kick you do it doesnt involve feet that much.

ESPN.com did a recent ranking of the sports.  Granted, they claimed to be unbiased, however they're American, so it might be from an American perspective.  This list only takes into account the sport/athletes themselves and not each sport's profitability or popularity, both which were brought up in previous posts.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills

(On the list Football=American Football and Soccer = World Football.)

that ranking is the toughest sports, however i believe rugby is "tougher" than for example basketball, and isnt like horse polo suicidally tough?

That ranking is based on "difficult" sports based on the attributes below, not toughest, which some may interpret as strength.  If you compare the numbers, they have Rugby scored higher than baseball in Endurance, Strength, Nerve, and Durability, however baseball outscores Rugby in the other attributes.

ENDURANCE: The ability to continue to perform a skill or action for long periods of time. Example: Lance Armstrong
STRENGTH: The ability to produce force. Example: NFL linebackers.
POWER: The ability to produce strength in the shortest possible time. Example: Barry Bonds.
SPEED: The ability to move quickly. Example: Marion Jones, Maurice Green.
AGILITY: The ability to change direction quickly. Example: Derek Jeter, Mia Hamm.
FLEXIBILITY: The ability to stretch the joints across a large range of motion. Example: Gymnasts, divers.
NERVE: The ability to overcome fear. Example: High-board divers, race-car drivers, ski jumpers.
DURABILITY: The ability to withstand physical punishment over a long period of time. Example: NBA/NHL players.
HAND-EYE COORDINATION: The ability to react quickly to sensory perception. Example: A hitter reacting to a breaking pitch; a drag racer timing acceleration to the green light.
ANALYTIC APTITUDE: The ability to evaluate and react appropriately to strategic situations. Example: Joe Montana reading a defense; basketball point guard on a fast break.

Can I borrow the 'CLUEBAT' to say Rover has gone out of business. Bankruptcy maybe??

And also, take a look at this coloUrful page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Leyland

Then criticise British car Manufacturing
Is that why they are still selling at 85000 and up? OH SHIT, NOW I GET IT. I forgot, over here there is no Rover car division, when I said Rover I was referring Land Rovers and Range Rovers, again some lenience is required on muliti-national threads. Honestly though, don't take my "better than you" comments too seriously, I love Brit styling, so much more subtle and refined than, say, those bunch of adolescents they got gluing crap onto those Ferrari's. Few things warrant an erection as much as the 60's era Jag E-type.

<whacks himself and everyone who didn't think of that earlier with the cluebat>

What the hell is that graph supposed to mean? There is no value for the Y-axis, yet some companies get "taller" in some parts as if to denote some change in value, maybe I'm too hungover, but honestly I can't make heads or tails of it.

PS- know anyone with an Enfield? Considering gettin one but first hand ownership accounts are scarce over here.

When I was younger I did find it strange that the Americans call their game football when most of the play doesn't involve the feet.  But, technically rugby is called rugby football, soccer = association football and your game is Gridiron football and language like to shorten things, just a shame you decided on football instead of gridiron

P.S Final Score England 6 - Jamaica 0 (they must have topped up on the wacky backy I guess)
