I wish my assistant gets eaten by a wolf. Not because of her political views but because she is annoying. I don't need her judging me or questioning how I run my classroom. I don't want to hear her opinions on anything.

My best assistant was the one who couldn't speak English and just sat there. At the end of the year I am going to ask for a different assistant.

Weird mindset for a teacher.

What's the point of being a teacher if you aren't interested in empowering and inspiring the youth with intellectual curiosity and the toolset to critically think to make their own positive impact on the world? No one says you have to enjoy your job, but you should at least strive to be great at it.

srs note, i don't know that i'd enforce a ban. seems like a dick move divesting your students of a device they can text their parents their farewells on when the next mass shooter comes through.

might have no choice with a maga assistant scrutinizing your every move like a commissar, though.

Today's lesson is Johnson's War on Poverty. I know the lady is internally screaming listening about how many things were created to help lower income people like her and her Amazon warehouse sons.

...

Her: "Are teachers going to switch away from using Chromebooks? Are we going to have textbooks again?!"

"We are never switching away from Chromebooks. Textbooks and pre digital stuff is not coming back. Textbooks wouldn't be helpful to this group of kids. The stuff I have are already modified for special education. I don't think the administrators have a problem with how I run the class."

seems my 'lindy' take on the changing sociology of STEM and the sciences is basically playing out, every day, in real time.

STEM jobs and actual research is for H1B rubber dinghy immigrants. even genius kids in the sciences are becoming quants for investment firms. that's where the new elite appeal rests. all the 1500 SAT perfect A's high-IQ asians going to MIT/stanford/caltech/harvard/etc now see the STEM undergrad as a stepping stone to a high-status job in the fake numbers high-finance game.

the people still clinging to this outmoded idea that STEM degrees produce an 'elite' of engineers and technologists are basically petit-bourgeois reddit moderators from 2014. STEM don't pay! and it doesn't carry the same kudos it did even a decade ago.

"become a legendary engineer", "change medicine and help millions of people", "design the next great architectural masterpiece".

actually it's just fin tech and hedge funds. hope you like AI-assisted SaaS apps.

it is much, much higher than 1/3rd now. research jobs and academic careers have plunged in compensation and prestige since the 1980s.

and i doubt that most engineering firms or the tech sector were drawing their new hires from china or india, then.

Want to hear more bitching about my assistant?

I told her to stop giving the kids snacks. She is upset that I am collectively punishing the class.

is that even allowed in 2025? sounds like lawsuit material. let the cafeteria and vending machines handle that stuff. imo, if i were a teacher, i'm not about to get blamed for making a kid sick.

i can't think of a single reason for a trump commissar to groom kids like that except as an in for their future votes. did she look constipated while handing out snacks? conservatives hate giving kids free stuff, don't they?

an adult giving candy to kids not their own (outside of holiday events like halloween) is creepy optics, man. if she has a sketchy economy van beater i'm gonna lose it.

I'm somehow doubtful 'investment firms' have the space to take that many STEM grads.

Amazingly this is another thing Australia has achieved with little fuss or the sky falling in.

I get that kids need a phone to send their last text during a school shooting but it doesn't really counterbalance every kid being on tik-tok all day every day during class.

at some level kids just need to buckle down and learn the best they can, but imo the way some material is taught isn't very engaging. spending years of  having your interest in fascinating topics drummed out of you by some of the worst misanthropic orators imaginable doesn't really teach a love for reading and knowledge. this isn't the path to a population hooked on lifelong learning.

some responsibility probably rests on shoulders of parents for sitting idly while their toddlers are always plugged in to some distraction for short attention spans.

before even getting into social violence done to people on a broader scale through such as harmful policy and malicious or negligent city planning.

Well, I had my interest in reading completely destroyed, still doesn't mean kids should have phones in school.

These days don't many schools have to suffer 'child-centred teaching'? Isn't that far more flexible than it used to be?
I know it means the teacher has to spend 90% of their time on the kid with ADHD but still.

Apparently an adjacent project has gone sideways, fully tooled up before any testing was done and it, er, doesn't work. Or it does work but stops working permanently if the temperature changes.
The company 'dream team' is now walking in circles, occasionally bumping into each other.
I think I pointed out the glaring faults about a year ago, about the time they stopped inviting me to their meetings.

If I'm asked to fix it I'm going to demand:
A hat - with whatever I want written on it
A jacket - with epaulets
Total executive power
Pick of the breedable females - not from this company obviously, they'll have to be hired in as contractors or something.

look to mac on this. i'm very much commenting from a comfy armchair.

i very much like the idea of not leaving children behind if it can all be helped, and there should be systems and funding in place to make that happen while not disrupting other student's concentration. i've mentioned before, problems are on a more holistic scale than what schools could address even if they got more staff and funding and facilities and didn't have to min-max for filling classrooms to capacity. and for america, trump 2.0 is certainly not going to fix things.

Well, I had my interest in reading completely destroyed
well, what you can do (since you're setting yourself apart form the general population a lot) is overcome your learned aversion and get reading, even if just out of spite. are you going to let some schmucks who may even be dead by now rule you? you may come to enjoy a book when it isn't attached to a banal assignment. try a book club and expand your horizons beyond ww2 reprintia.

still doesn't mean kids should have phones in school.
that's probably going to be a losing battle. they couldn't even get calculators away from students decades ago, and those weren't (usually) a central part of a student's social life.

school takes up too much of a person's life. you get up while it's still dark, sleep through first period, leave way past noon, and then you're doing homework when the sky begins to darken. "it builds work ethic!" celebrated boomer parents who later lamented mobile phones bringing their work life home. lol.

when my elderly family got sick, they spent time recovering. when kids my age got sick, they got a pile of homework assignments to keep them company. get rid of homework.

Literally already done in Australia.

I mean, I guess limiting school shootings by taking away assault rifles is a logical first step which is also unpossible.

She is strange. On the one hand she complains about the kids and how they act. On the other hand she doesn't want them to go hungry. Lunch is free in our school but the kids often don't want the school food. So she provides snacks to them.

The annoying part is that oftentimes the kids come in and ask for snacks and make a scene if they don't get one. They will also repeatedly ask for snacks and stuff like that throughout the class. I don't want a situation where the kids make a scene about snacks when they first come in.

I don't want to have to explain to kids how to politely ask her for snacks if they want one. It is more work for me. I also don't want her comments or judgment about how the class is run or complaining about how the district is run. My two observations for the year are over and I want to take my foot off the gas and work on my side work projects. But I have her here making comments about the kids being disengaged, I get paid too much, technology is paid, politely asking for snacks. Etc.

I just want an assistant who sits there and doesn't say anything.

@Newbie

Student centered learning is a type of learning where the students are active participants in learning. Not just in classroom activities but also in even picking their classes. The concept of elective classes and different tracks are all part of student centered learning. A lot of countries don't so electives and stuff like that.

...

Cooperative learning is a type of learning where students work together to increase skills and understanding. Sometimes the students are capable of teaching things to each other in a better way that I can. Think of group projects.

...

Project based learning is a type of learning where the kids learn through working on projects. The projects often include a research portion, draft, final review, etc. This is the coolest type of learning because the kids actually go through the steps of being a project manager. Combine it with cooperative learning and you just created a well developed lesson. Very high on Bloom taxonomy.

...

Social Emotional Learning is most of what I do with the students. Teach history in a way that gives them good life lessons like: calling a classmate a monkey isn't kind. And you shouldn't beat kids up over social media post. So much of this history stuff just goes over their head and isn't useful at least at their level. So I am half a social worker/therapist.
