What are we training people for with homework? That their job commitment should continue even when they're off the clock? Screw that. Fifty+ problems they can just get with an answer key anyway or ask online, highly pointless and imo doesn't really prove where they're at in terms of understanding. So much time wasted with busywork assignments that could be spent developing as a human being and learning skills you'll actually use.

Homework assignments should be exclusively extra credit, or reading.

My company did layoffs today. (at this point, which tech company hasn't?)
10% or about 100 people.
I was saved but as I'm in internal-tech, I was the one swinging the axe on their accounts immediately after HR and their manager had their meetings with them.
Sit in a room and wait for them to message us telling me another person was ready to led onto the slaughterhouse floor. Felt inhumane. Just culling the herd.

One of my colleagues has quit and is returning to his home country (long story which I don't fully believe)

The point to this is he's taking his dog back - and went to great lengths to tell us exactly how he'd faked all the documents so it could travel in the cabin as a 'service (emotional support) dog'.

If this goes wrong he'll miss all his connections and be stuck in the airport with a dog, partner and a whole lot of luggage.

I'm not going to report him but if I had to sit on a plane for 17 hours with someone's mutt, 'service' or otherwise, near me I'd be mightily pissed.
If it were someone's pet they'd faked the documents for then quadruply so.

This doesn't affect management cause it's "too difficult"

FWIW tech companies also overbuilt during COVID and are now shrinking their expenses and workforce. A lot of executives have been reshuffled or fired for it all though. I know they fired the Amazon logistics guy for overbuilding warehouses because of COVID. That guy was the one who built the entire Amazon infrastructure and he had to fall on his sword for a bad call regarding COVID.

It is funny about the plastic face shields. I didn't mind wearing a face mask during the pandemic but a face shield is too much. There was one teacher who wore a shield for awhile before she ditched it.

Airlines are unfair to pets. How many animals have been surrendered because of an uncooperative airline?

I'm guessing they bought the dog while in Australia. That's not a decision I'd have made, knowing I could be leaving at any time. I can't imagine they just saw the dog as an accessory, having gone through the effort to fake documents for it.

Honestly I wouldn't care about sitting by someone's dog as long as it didn't have fleas. People's kids can be gross, but nobody's told to put their 3yo in a cargo crate.

IIRC, the point of facemasks is to cause people wearing them to not spread it as easily. Facemasks don't prevent you from breathing it in if you're walking through a cloud of it. In this blasé "post-COVID" climate, nobody in this country is wearing them anymore. COVID is over, dontcha know.

I don't mind most pet stories. There's a lot of stuff I can relate to having been around all kinds of dogs and cats, and sometimes birds. Am I a Grinch for thinking that the copypasta sad memes and thoughts/prayers responses enable this kind of content? I know some people consider it screaming into a void, but I'd feel about as awkward and burdensome laying it all out online as I would with a stranger in a grocery checkout.

I used to follow an animal rescue Facebook page. I haven't seen a video from them in awhile which makes me wonder what even happened there. Maybe the algorithm decided it wasn't for me anymore. Because nobody knows how that works either.

But yeah there are only so many times I can see an animal rescue story. It is very grating to date people with dogs too. "I have to be home to walk the dog" "the dog woke me up last night because he had diarrhea." Fuck all that. Had to listen to the Indonesian lady cry about her dog the ex took with him while I was on break at 9:15 AM.

That one teacher I have dreams about owns 3 cats and a dog. If I ever successfully convince her to take a chance with me then I will suddenly be in a relationship with 2 to 3 animals. Imagine moving in and living in a place like that.
