i’ve been in one place for 2 years. before that i was self-isolated for 1.5 years in the UK, when that level of restriction was justified, prior to vaccines. i didn’t even see my then girlfriend, who was a 2 hr train journey away. our relationship ended.
think you’re going to have to find a new line other than “travel obsessed”.
i’ve always spoke about the necessity of international travel and human beings, as well as goods, crossing borders in terms of the international labour system and global markets. i’ve never made an appeal to open up airways for package holidays.
and, it’s quite right to point out that for as long as a small group are necessarily exempted from travel bans, be they ambassadors and diplomats or manual factory workers who undergird so much of the labour markets in the west, then there will be a ready vector of covid transmission that defeats the whole point.
china tried 3 years of totally closed borders and they’ve been playing whack-a-mole with covid in various cities the whole time. playing with tens, if not hundreds, of millions of lives, throwing them into the most draconian treatments possible at the flip of a switch. it didn’t work.
still you’re ranting about ‘travel obsessed tourists’. they surely weren’t the problem in china. and i’m not one of their number. so maybe time to, erm, actually make a fucking point, eh chap? you are tilting at windmills.
