Waste of time.
People say that? This is evocative of Dilbert telling us that it was emotional watching Supergirl floating in space. I just wasn't interested in the Maverick trailer. Over Top Gun, I preferred Hot Shots and stuff with Leslie Nielsen. Maverick at face value seems like a revival for boomers and 80s/90s kids who were actually fans.

Mac, watch the first one if you want. Probably a better choice than Halloween Returns Again for the Last Time.
A friend told me he got misty-eyed in the theater. One of my brothers told me it was the best movie he's seen in a while (but his kids are named after star wars characters so...). More than a few friends had great things to say.

It was not a good movie. I literally laughed at the dialog more than once.

I feel sorry for your nieces and/or nephews. Hopefully the hospital, or at least his wife, tried to discourage him from using 'Chewbacca.' Imagine naming your kid 'R2D2' without being an eccentric celebrity.

Imagine being the Star Wars kid and having to hear your name on movie night like "Luke? Luuuke!" Aight, imma head out.

Contagion (2011)  9/10

Like Idiocracy it looks like a documentary now, remarkably prescient right down to the blogger-nuts.

Has Idiocracy ever been intended to be that deep before commentary got its hands on it? Comparing everything to Idiocracy is such an aging, ugly meme. A self-own when it was used against Trumpers (and the poor, and the uneducated), and as an extension demonstrates implicit support for eugenics. Elitist wankfest with shades of pseudoscience.

In no way a 'documentary.'

idiocracy is held up by reddit bros as some genius insight. you know, precisely the sort of people who don't read.

mike judge's stuff is great but according it the powers of prophecy is akin to thinking the matrix was the deepest movie ever.

if you spend your entire life in the shallows of pop culture, i'm sure this is heady stuff.

No one said it was heady stuff, just prescient.

I guess only looking backwards makes this confusing.

I definitely heard this as well that it was an outstanding movie. I saw a clip on youtube and then read a synopsis and it seemed to be pretty fucking stupid.

what if i told you

literature and the other arts are just as capable of looking forward as mike judge movies.

you’re really barking up the wrong tree with this one. it’s not like i’m a middle english aficionado or a shakespearean scholar. my area of research was modernism and the avant-garde. the main text i studied for my MA thesis is literally set in the future. i did research on technology studies and postmodern epistemology (like latour, who recently died). all of this is manifestly concerned with the present/future.

it’s so funny that you think historians or humanities experts are forever digging around in dusty archives for some new insight about henry VIII or something. yet another dull and predictable proof that our man dilbert has no fucking clue what the people whom he rails and rages against all day even do.

some of the biggest growing areas of literary research (incl. concrete job postings) today are in big data, digital humanities, natural language processing, etc. a literature PhD doesn't have to be focused on 16th century edmund spenser and the faerie queene. you'd have a hard time finding funding from an institution or public body thesedays to make that your specialism.

You can't make a movie like this nowadays.

Probably because this clearly doesn't work.

After his tenure as principal of Eastside High, Clark later served as director of the Essex County Detention House in Newark, New Jersey, a juvenile detention facility.

I wonder how different this movie would have been if the kid jumped right there.

Whoops.

The rest of the movie would be Morgan Freeman trying to cover up the murder/suicide. He chases the IT guy out of his office in order to erase the security camera tapes. Makes a show of firing the IT guy etc.

The final scene is set at parent teacher night and Morgan Freeman is like

Can you imagine a shot for shot remake of this movie up until the point of the jump? Trick people into thinking they are watching Lean On Me (2022) and instead end up with the Joker. I would buy a ticket for this movie.

Lightyear - Ha ha I'll give it 7/10 The cat was good, "meowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeow" - genius.

Significant Other 6.5/10 It had a few unusual bits at least, I'm sure there are a whole lot more minimal budget, minimal cast, middle of nowhere pandemic era films to come out. This is OK

I would rather stitch my eyelids shut than have anything more to do with the Toy Story franchise. They've milked that cow so hard, all it produces is corpse dust.

I have no idea what the other movie is about from the description. Are they being stalked by vampires, bigfoot, or an axe murderer? It's the Pacific Northwest, it could be all of the above. Did they even bother to register their hike with the ranger station?

If I want to see a mossy forest, I can drive across the bridge with a sandwich, sit in a parking lot, and listen to muffled silence. Probably pretty unusual landscape for you though.

Stop bullying Dilbert. He tried to talk about some wholesome movie and you tear him down.

You know Dilbert has never criticized my writing. Makes you think.

I keep telling you to write a book, but you won't.

What bullying? He gave those movies a 6 and a 7. I'm not exactly tearing down his favorite film of all time here.

Saw the ending to Kiss Me Deadly. The bottom film picks up where the top one left off.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
Very clear where the suitcase from Pulp Fiction came from

How different would Pulp Fiction have been if the Ark of the Covenant was inside that briefcase opened at the restaurant.

it's pretty well-known in cinéaste circles that 'kiss me deadly', among many other noirs and pulps, was a direct influence on pulp fiction. tarantino as a director has never exactly been reticent about revealing his influences and fascinations. he is practically the model of a 'fanboy' director.

now, write me a 5,000 word essay on the application of lacan's concept of the objet petit 'a' and its relation to pulp fiction's briefcase, as well as macguffin's more generally, and now we're really off to the races with some genuine insight.

I saw The Banshees of Inisherin on Sunday night.  It was kind of a weird, depressing movie but it had a lot of funny moments.  I was expecting it to be some sort of prequel to In Bruges because of who's in it, but instead it was a completely different story set in 1920s rural Ireland.
