i was talking about the limited times when i use a wireless dongle to work from public parks. i'm sure the ice caps are melting because of me, sharing a 5G hub with 30,000 other people in my immediate vicinity.

read the article. data centres are highly energy efficient and are becoming more so all the time.

yes, they're a necessary evil, but the internet is the backbone of the 21st century and its increasing proportion of 'energy use' represents us pivoting away from other, more co2-emitting, forms of human activity (% of electricity consumption and total co2 emissions are not necessarily the same thing.)

i suppose we should give up remote working lifestyles because *checks notes* the internet is polluting. much better if we all drove cars into the office every day, isn't it, dilbert ... like you do? i mean, you REALLY can't make this fucking shit up. subaru enthusiast who drives to work every day criticises someone for using fibre-optic internet.

apple is one of the main tech companies committed to making their data infrastructure completely green. photos are stored predominantly on their icloud. so there you go.

the internet is critical to almost every sphere of economic activity in the world. it is essential. it is also "always on", as the article above points out. single users opting out of cloud storage or going 'offline' isn't going to lower its energy consumption. this isn't about individual consumer choice. the data centres won't close because a bunch of greenpeace activists swear to go back to letter writing and communicating via radio.

and still, here we are: you criticizing me for using the internet, an essential tool for my job ... whilst you needlessly drive into an office everyday in a petrol vehicle, and get excited about business trips to asia.

what are you going to use it for? genuine question. don't tell me a teacher at their desk or lectern can't check their emails on their phone.

My pixel smartwatch came in. I think it definitely looks better than what I had before and also in general looks nice. I think they definitely did a good job making it look discreet.

I haven't found much special uses for it yet but I really dig the health tracking. I did not like that I needed a data plan to use the LTE. The LTE capable version cost $50 more than the other version + you need to buy a plan with a carrier. The extra $50 is dick.

If I swapped to iPhone and wanted a spy games wrist screen, I'd probably pair it with the apple series 8. Looks decent for what it is. Otherwise, just some old school casio quartz is fine.

2TB sounds a bit artificially limiting. I wonder what their reason for that cap was. The ol' Microsoft "nobody will ever need that much?"

The Xbox naming scheme is utterly incomprehensible.

There must be some exec over at Microsoft whose Custer decision can't be backed down from now. IMO just call the next one XBox 6 or 7 so they're at or above Playstation's number. Unless there's already been one of those, I don't even know.

Nintendo doesn't really have a consistent naming scheme either but it's not confusing? Weird to explain.

It's hardly a new observation that you can buy a current gen console and a good TV for at or under the cost of a video card and recommended PSU.

According to userbenchmark, it might be a worthwhile upgrade depending on what all you're doing. But also consider the much cheaper 4080. I certainly wouldn't want to drop $2k on a video card every generation.
