I think this is the last time Republicans let abortion go to vote in their states. NYT said based on their updates predictions, 4 out of 5 states would protect abortion rights if it went to vote.

Both a surprising and not surprising outcome. Not surprising since it turns out that bottling up the sexual revolution isn't something people want to do when given the choice. Surprising since I expected there to be a lot more voters who are weird about sex and want to limit abortion.

The pivot I've seen re: Kansas now is "See? The states decided, just as we always intended", pretending they only had an issue with the federal-level  part of it rather than protecting them zygotes. I imagine a decent amount of Republican leaning voters would have an abrupt smack in the face if they came up against the GOP dreamworld/hellscape.

Surprisingly I haven't heard that angle yet from conservative friendos. One belabored the horror of 9mo abortions, easy counter asking how relevant it is to earlier stage and lifesaving abortions. Even he acknowledged (actually brought up) that it was stupid that we have no push for maternal leave from "pro-lifers." I could have gone off on a huge cynical tangent, but places to go, things to do.

highly normal society.

in what moral universe is it worse to flush out a tangle of bloody cells than it is to drop an actual child into a fucking letterbox? lmfao.

Blinked a few times. That is surreal. It's not sattire?

Reminds me of a book return slot. Mike Pence Public Babrary. Deloused of liberal germs, tazed to ward off homosexuality, and shelved for the hordes of conservative parents eager to come rescue them to create more loyal, Christian voters.

"Why isn't anyone coming to rescue them?"

abortions were delegalized in korea a few years ago.

insofar as they have any of that shit, it's pretty much the influence of bug-eyed crazy evangelicism that was transplanted here from american missionaries anyway.

you no doubt know better than i whether this is decriminalization or delegalization. i am not using the terms with a scholarly attention to detail.

e: you're right, it was decriminalized. no idea why i used the original word.

Pick-a-red-state and their pro-life approach to diminishing the health of families.

Pregnant women held for months in one Alabama jail to protect fetuses from drugs
https://www.al.com/news/2022/09/pregnan … drugs.html

“The stress and conditions in jail and prisons, including lack of consistent access to standard prenatal care and mental health care, poor diets, poor sanitation, infestations with bugs and vermin, poor ventilation, tension, noise, lack of privacy, lack of family and community contact, can be detrimental to physical and mental health which can result in poor pregnancy outcomes for both the mother and the baby,” Sufrin wrote.
Banks has a high-risk pregnancy due to a family history of miscarriage. She said she was jailed at around six weeks of pregnancy. About six weeks into her incarceration, she started bleeding and was taken to Gadsden Regional Medical Center, according to court documents. Doctors diagnosed her with a subchorionic hematoma, a condition where blood pools near the wall of the uterus.

The condition increases the chances of miscarriage and preterm delivery, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Banks said jail officials told her she could sleep on the bottom bunk because of her high-risk pregnancy. However, her cell had one bottom bunk and two women assigned to sleep in it. So, the other woman used the bed, according to court documents, and Banks slept on the floor.

She continued to bleed for five weeks in jail. She said she also suffered from hunger and fainting spells. Two times, specialists evaluated her for drug addiction and found she didn’t qualify for free addiction services offered through the state. Her lawyers said investigators then urged Banks to say she had a drug addiction she did not have to bond out.

“Ms. Banks is currently incarcerated indefinitely because the State will not accept her $10,000.00 cash bail and she does not qualify for a residential drug treatment,” her petition said.

Since her bond conditions required rehab, and since rehab wouldn’t take her, she continued sleeping on a jailhouse floor until Aug. 25, when an Etowah County judge released her to community corrections.

At least two more minors made pregnant by sexual assault were forced to leave Ohio to avoid having their rapists’ babies, according to sworn affidavits filed by abortion providers.

The affidavits were filed in Cincinnati as part of a lawsuit aimed at stopping the enforcement of Ohio’s strict new abortion law. Originally paused for two weeks, the enforcement delay will be extended to at least Oct. 12.

If true, the affidavits show that a 10-year-old from Columbus was not the only child or teen rape victim forced to leave the state. They also describe more than two dozen other instances in which the abortion law put women under extreme duress.

The descriptions include those of three women who threatened suicide. They also include two women with cancer who couldn’t terminate their pregnancies and also couldn’t get cancer treatment while they were pregnant.

Another three examples were of women whose fetuses had severe abnormalities or other conditions that made a successful pregnancy impossible. Even so, they couldn’t get abortions in Ohio.

And in three cases, debilitating vomiting was caused by pregnancy ‒ so bad in one case that a woman couldn’t get off the clinic floor. But neither could these women get abortions in Ohio, the affidavits said.

Strange feeling about this. I don't think there exist a word for it. It is awful that these people have to do go through this. But there is also a sick humor to it. The fact that some people are so high on themselves and their religion that they willingly unleashed this horror on themselves and loved ones...funny in a way. Doubly so watching it from NJ with our legally protected abortion.

"Pro-life" activist have suicide bomber mentality. American Taliban wasn't too far of a description.

Now excuse me while I conspire to convince the girl who works in my building to let me raw dog 🐶 her so I can write about it.
