What about the monkey pox? Why is it okay to call that monkey pox but we couldn't call COVID bat flu?
no had had a problem with bat flu on political grounds, iirc. it was just plain inaccurate. covid has variously been 'pangolin flu', 'mink flu', 'deer flu' ...
the WHO have been weighing a name-change for 'monkeypox' since it has received international attention, though.
anything that suggests a disease is limited only to one species or region is probably not accurately named.

Pretty sure covid was bat flu from day one.

god damned gain-of-function research … damn those scientists who want to continue with their virological research without being rumbled by the dilbert’s of this world!
so conceivably we could have an all-purpose covid vaccine that also provides immunity against common cold. for the first time ever.
now watch dilbert complain that he has to get it every few years to ensure continued immunity.

Yes, it only cost six million lives - so far. Probably double that in fact, and double or triple that yet to go.
You know what? The holocaust was totally worth it.
Sure six million people died, but we got some useful data on high altitude effects on the human body and Nazi anatomy books are still the go-to resource for surgeons today. Think of all the people who had better outcomes on their hernia ops.

it had been a few days since you mentioned nazis or the holocaust. there we go.
you really need to expand your reading and sphere of reference. it’s literally a parodic trope to mention hitler in an argument. like it’s right there in the rhetoric #101 examples of how to be laughably bad in an argument.

The point is you care not in the slightest for all the people who have died and will die.

God will know his own.

i've promoted the most efficacious treatments and the best public health measures, as recommended by ... pretty well every government on earth at this point?
how you equate 'proportional and prudent measures' to 'clapping at 6 million dying' is beyond me. you sound deranged.
you really do think in your own little world, that your own domestic situation and feelings about your parents are the limits of the earth, don't you?
But your priority at all times is travel and partying, haven't heard a word from you about anyone else's interests.
Here it doesn't really seem like we're winning.

Overall, daily deaths (these apparently at the lowest they've been since the early days of this thing) and daily cases are massively down since the end of 2021.
How many deaths among your cited were vaccinated or lacking comorbidities, I wonder?
e: I'm not sure about your "at all times." Wasn't zeek pretty much following protocol?
Didn't you go to a restaurant? I remember a story about some guy wanting to hug you that spooked you.

The pandemic is over. Return to normalcy.

i didn’t attend a single social occasion for 1.5 years. didn’t see anyone in my family, even. didn’t see my then girlfriend for over a year. i made sacrifices like everyone else.
you’re a precious man child who thinks your parental shielding scenario should be extended to 3 billion people.
naw dilbs is right, we should go back to our prison colony days and keep the border shut.uziq wrote:

that was his favourite part of the pandemic. it simultaneously kept foreigners and brown people out of the country and made him feel better about not having a social life or holiday plans.
The point is for all uziq's droning on about how vaccines have solved this, anti-virals mean people can go back to partying its actually worse than ever, vaccines weren't very good and are now practically ineffective.
We need a vaccine every three months now and they're obsolete before they're even in production, great.

it literally is not worse than ever? worse than ever in the very limited case of australia, maybe, but globally covid-19 deaths are down.
what brought deaths down? vaccination. highly effective vaccination, in the first instance. yes, at this point, using 'vaccine 1.0' tech that is 2 years old, boosters for the vulnerable have to be rolled out every 3 or 6 months. that's very not ideal, i agree, but it's hardly the end of the world.
booster shots work. antivirals work. new medications are coming on-line all the time. this stuff works.
moderna now have a trial vaccine with multivalent protection against all known variants. it even potentially protects against common cold, it's that effetive.
would you read a journal once in a while or will you only regurgitate talking points from the australian news? or how about reading some good news instead of selectively catastrophizing?
https://choice.npr.org/index.html?origi … nt-vaccine
imagine still advocating for 'zero covid', now, at this point. every single country on earth who attempted it tried and failed. the economic self-wounding, social harms, etc, are immense – all for a failed objective. the only country still pursuing 'your' strategy are china, and look at all the social unrest and chaos that it's causing there.
the world can't close its borders completely for 5 years dilbert. lockdowns do not work in any medium term. they are circuit breakers, not a deliverence from the pandemic. lockdowns will never return us to normal life. for that, you need ... vaccines.
how many times have we had this conversation now? 30? and you talk about 'droning on'. you haven't had any new ideas or insights in about 18 months. literally every public health body and government in the world has moved on from your blathering. you are irrelevant.

Yes, great news, only 15,000 deaths a week! As long as it not me its OK!
They failed because they didn't try hard enough.
My state did really well, life was practically normal with zero covid for almost two years.

oh my god it's like groundhog day only without the funny bits.
even outdated vaccine 1.0 tech and at this point ineffective boosters has the death rate at a clear -50% from the rate that was posted this time 2 years ago. derp!

15,000 deaths a week is great! Just think it could have been 30,000!

certainly never said it's great. but it's getting better all the time.
in a bad flu season 100,000s of people die in a few months. the fightback against the virus is also complicated by ineffectual vaccines. shall we close down society for 4 months of every year to curb flu deaths?

If we're doing worldometer charts, the two on the front page suggest that both daily deaths are massively down below what they've otherwise been since March 2020, and daily new cases have receded towards prewinter levels. We're not where we want to be yet, but vaccines and antivirals are rapidly improving. There is no good reason for indefinite, complete lockdowns of COVID-19's early history with which, if we are to triage, would do more harm than good now.
Dilbert, hopefully you still wear a mask at work for all your concern.

I do wear a mask at work.
A bad flu season comes round every 2-3 years, we've had about 10 bad covid seasons in 2.5 years and its not getting much better.
We're in a slight lull and uziq has declared victory, now its ticking up. Who knows where we'll be in a month or two.

i’m saying vaccines are highly effective and will be the way to return to normality.
since vaccine rollout we haven’t had any more huge peaks of covid deaths. even with a much more dangerous and virulent form, delta. no giant peak in global deaths. vaccines literally ‘flattened the curve’.
never said there wouldn’t be upticks or downticks. that’s what cyclical and endemic illness looks like. get your booster and continue with your life.
advocating for permanent suspension of international travel or semi-lockdown, forever, because of said upticks is not a policy. the ‘seal it off, shut it down’ approach doesn’t even work to control new cases. we have had this conversation 30 times now. “they didn’t try hard enough” seems to me an unsatisfactory explanation as to how every country on earth failed. maybe it’s … not feasible within any reasonable bounds?
and this is to say nothing of the ongoing evolution of the virus itself. all those conversations we had about omicron likely being the future direction of the pandemic, that is towards highly contagious but mild illness. no major variant has usurped omicron in over 6 months. it’s not impossible, of course, and new subvariants of omicron are testing people’s immunity; but the pandemic has shifted direction. the picture is much different to how it was when being locked in your home and prevented from travel were deemed necessary emergency measures.
