Hmm, well that's different.

The Astroworld disaster is so infuriating. This is one sphere of internet negativity I am happy to be a part of.

Completely preventable disaster. The musician who repeatedly encouraged this sort of shit at his shows could have been stopped if he was properly punished the first few times he did it. But he is a billionaire married to Kardashian. Now a handful of minors are dead. He kept the concert going and singing while directly staring at the dead kids. Then you have people getting on top on the ambulance and dancing.

Doubly infuriating it happened at a rap concert.

Allegedly Betty White has died. Very ominous, 2022, taking out the big dogs right at the start.

Never saw her appeal. I knew her mostly as a Reddit meme.

Do you have to dwell on it though, really? Would Betty White want everyone to mope around?

true crime really isn't my thing, and i published a decent amount of it in my book publishing days.

the recent interest in true-crime podcasts, netflix series, etc, seems to be another turn of the screw. most of the trad 'true crime' book industry turns on traditional cases and objects of public fascination, e.g. jack the ripper, the zodiac killer, etc. you know, thriller movie type stuff. at least everyone in those cases is long dead (which, of course, enables so many more speculative shitty books to be written about it, as they are essentially inconclusive cold cases now).

recent hipster true crime podcasts to come into vogue, though, have dealt with cases in recent memory, with living relatives/victims, or even ongoing court cases. i find the whole thing pretty prurient and distasteful, to be honest. there have been some disastrous overlaps and miscarriages of justice when a netflix crew rocks up and focuses the national lens on some murderer's court appeal or whatever. great entertainment, to be sure, but probably not good for the public life of society.

(detective fiction, as a branch of genre fiction, however, can be pretty good and serves up the same thrills and satisfactions in a victim-free imaginary way; i recommend Simenon).

It is really distasteful I agree. I would not bring it up at Dick Clark's New Year's Rocking Eve event that Betty White went to today.

One Youtube Channel that caught my attention discovered how to use Freedom of Information Act request to get "never before seen interrogation videos". Only way I can think of for them to get things the other Youtube vultures haven't. The system seems to be working. This was posted the 29th and is 3/4 of the way to a million views.

Exploitative thumbnail, clickbait title, a million views. He solved the algorithm.

I can't say it's any better or worse than Unsolved Mysteries back in the day and things with cheesy dramatic re-creations. The appetite by fans is ravenous, so it's not that surprising you can rack up views even with an already oversaturated market.

RIP. great director and seriously under-rated actor.
