Did you read the conclusion?

Poor people filling up on junk food and having bad nutrition do seem like more specific indicators. Let me renew my advocacy for free school meals here.

Poverty, low IQ, and obesity...it's all connected. Uncomfortably so.

Did you know the average IQ for U.S. prisons is about 10 points shifted down from the general public? Again, all connected.

Final Expanse book was good though the climax was pretty generic.

Seems like a lazy connection with missing when you put it that way. I feel like there are a number of intelligent and successful fat people.

What is the average eye color of poor people?

I'm not saying you can't be successful if you are fat.

One of my professors who could walk you through the ins and outs of a wide away of electronics, computing, networking, mathematics, etc. was what I would probably call morbidly obese.

You are probably in that obesity connects to poor nutrition connects to poor socioeconomic status connects to poor scholastic performance but it doesn't follow that fat people are dumb as a rule. There are smart fat people and dumb skinny people.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're setting up for the grand reveal in a post about an actress whose cheeks are 2mm too wide for your liking.

Read the story about the wrongful conviction of the black guy who was accused of raping that "Lovely Bones" author. The publisher pulled the memoir of the accuser. She said they maybe will rewrite it. Hope the 2nd victim of the story gets a cut of the proceeds if they do. Yikes. Never take a bench trial

Aus lost an attorney general over an unprovable rape accusation.

Then said attorney general decided to torpedo his own career by taking secret money to sue our equiv of the bbc.

this is literally the sort of thing you say all the time. 'the overweening influence and power of feminism', 'pernicious influence of women/LGBTQ/black rights', etc. you literally use single miscarriages of justice or anecdotes about fruitcakes to try and discredit the whole thing.

i am not surprised that your little ears perk up whenever you hear a story like this. you think like a tabloid columnist. you smell the story and can already hear the battle drums of the culture war.

It’s almost as if the justice system causes a lot of
miscarriage of justice.

Any good books about the American Revolution? You would think for a bunch of people who liked writing so much one the founding fathers would have made a great book about the war.

As a history teacher I'd expect you'd be the one recommending good ones to us.

The answer of course depends largely on intended audience. What's the best one for American children? High school students? What about ones in the Russian language for middle age dabblers in Americana?

What's the scope? People? Politics? Campaign? Battles? Letters? Anecdotes? Or some encyclopedic overview? Patriotic or neutral tone? Historical fiction or non-fiction?

I never taught U.S. 1. So my knowledge of that time period isn't as sharp as it could be. I am okay about that. I don't care for that period of history. 30ish years of hearing we can't have universal healthcare because the founding fathers constitution liberty blah blah soured me on the era. The French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars though... that's the good stuff.

I did a research, noob, and it seems like there isn't any American equivalent of Caesar's Gallic Wars and Civil War or Trotsky's Russian Civil War. And that's a shame.

Now as far modern writing it is really hard to tell what is and is not pandering/historical abuse/etc. when looking at what to read. So I mostly looked at what has been published by university presses. I saw one published by Oxford University Press. It was also suggested by others online.

"Almost A Miracle: The American Victory in the War of Independence"
In this gripping chronicle of America's struggle for independence, award-winning historian John Ferling transports readers to the grim realities of that war, capturing an eight-year conflict filled with heroism, suffering, cowardice, betrayal, and fierce dedication. As Ferling demonstrates, it
was a war that America came much closer to losing than is now usually remembered. General George Washington put it best when he said that the American victory was "little short of a standing miracle."

Almost a Miracle offers an illuminating portrait of America's triumph, offering vivid descriptions of all the major engagements, from the first shots fired on Lexington Green to the surrender of General Cornwallis at Yorktown, revealing how these battles often hinged on intangibles such as
leadership under fire, heroism, good fortune, blunders, tenacity, and surprise. Ferling paints sharp-eyed portraits of the key figures in the war, including General Washington and other American officers and civilian leaders. Some do not always measure up to their iconic reputations, including
Washington himself. The book also examines the many faceless men who soldiered, often for years on end, braving untold dangers and enduring abounding miseries. The author explains why they served and sacrificed, and sees them as the forgotten heroes who won American independence.
The reviews on Amazon call it balanced. For instance, it goes into Washington's defeats and blunders rather than present him as perfect.

Be careful, being seen to criticize the prophets is almost as bad as being a proponent of CRT.

european and english academics are, unsurprisingly, a little more willing to put washington in his context as a rather inexperienced and middling british officer.

afaik he was explicitly rejected being given a commission into the top-brass precisely because he was considered a liability and fucked up repeatedly during his service.

I think it is well known that Washington wasn't a great field commander. He made almost all of the right decisions as a political leader though. During his terms he basically laid out the foundation of our government system from nothingness. The fact that he decided to not stay in office until death is also very special.

washington didn't come up with the idea of the american system ex nihilo or entirely by himself, that's ridiculous.

though i will grant you that the american war of independence and clean breakaway was a world-first in many ways, it's not as if they were beginning afresh with a brand new form of society. english/british society itself had dealt with civil wars before and arguments over taxation/overweening monarchs.

The French and Soviets absorbed more of their previous states than the Americans did. The French and Russian Revolutions went haywire and a good part of that is because of the decisions of revolutionary leaders.

I do hold the position that the trajectory of the U.S. from 1776 to 1991 is an absolute miracle of circumstances. Of course if I were an Iraqi I would feel very different about how miraculous western liberalism's last quarter millennium run has been.
