i always said about jay that his worst problem was that he had a little learning ...

A little learning is a dangerous thing;
Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring:
There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
And drinking largely sobers us again.

the idea being that education should be thorough and in-depth, whereas the modern era and internet specifically allows morons to think they grasp everything because they can read wikipedia, or search google in haste to find support for their risible arguments (ahem).

education itself is systematic and grounded in a field of knowledge/intellectual context.

considering yourself an expert on hegel because you read a slate article once is not quite the same thing.

To cushion the transition back to in-person, the Portland teachers’ union has pitched one day of remote instruction a week for high schoolers after winter break.

On Monday, the Portland Association of Teachers proposed cancelling in-person class every Friday, during which teachers would provide small group tutoring online for half the day and let students out of school early so they can use the other half of the day for lesson planning, according to The Oregonian.
Awful idea. Who is going to watch my kids while I work the desk at the gun store?

National Review comment on the article.

"More proof teachers' unions are not about the kids. Next time they strike because "it's about the kids", we know it is yet another lie.
Sounds like they want to work less and get a 2.5 day weekend.
I would prefer for teachers who are burned out to go find another job and let creative new blood into the profession."

What alternate reality does this guy live in where there isn't a shortage of teachers? Creative blood...dude nobody wants to do this as it is.

I'd be fine with four days of school a week, less homework, but longer classes per subject. Can still keep it open on non-class days for free meal schemes and safe places to study and get additional free tutoring as needed.

Easier in the short term to just consign kids in poor schools to a bleak future, but that doesn't exactly help out communities or the country as a whole.

A four day week does make sense.

At one company I worked for they had a 4 1/2 day week which was great in theory but a good number of people started at 6am on Friday and left before half the rest of the workforce showed up so it was impossible to get anything done.

That sounds like a company leadership issue more than something inherently wrong with four days a week. If people aren't working or coordinating, there should be an internal review.

Well anyway they just cancelled the whole thing, made it a five day week and made about 2000 people redundant before selling it to a French company who made almost everyone else redundant.
Thats third generation owners for you.

Apart from crunches, I don't recall ever getting more office work done spread out in 5-7 days than in 4. Lots of idle time usually when you give people long work weeks at an office. Waste of time and resources.

Also, there's always some workaholic exception who boasts about their 100+ hour workweeks. Drilled into them that having a screwed up work/life balance, sorry, "Very Good Work Ethic" is something to be very proud of and hold over everyone else.

"There's just not enough time in a week for me to get everything done!" is a problem somewhere with organization or staffing. Darn micromanagers.

Getting your clothes ready the night before, going through your whole wake up, shower etc. routine, and a commute adds a bunch of stress that people don't need. 1 day less of in person time free up mental bandwidth.

There is a certain derision in the business world for businesses whose office hours only run four days a week, and people who don't work absurd hours, that the country will have to get past sooner or later. This contest of who can work the longest, and the false notion that it equates to the best quality, need to end. Instead of being jealous of the accountants and government workers, more business people should push for that kind of experience themselves.

"I'm miserable so everyone should be miserable." < "I want to be less miserable."

A lot to unpack there.

I think most of the problems in this country stem from miserable people wanting others to be miserable like them. A lot of otherwise normal people could probably be helped with antidepressants once they reach early 40's.

An awful lot of people barely scrape a few productive hours in any week.
Sitting at your desk longer doesn't really add.

a lot of the time it's merely the inertia of 'workplace culture'. japan and korea are the paragons at this distinctly 1980s-style type of corporate belongerism. they work the longest hours in the OECD and do not see any marked increase productivity as a result; often times, it actually does harm to productivity (to say nothing of worker happiness and mental health, natch).

i work 3.5 hours a day, 5 days a week but occasionally 6 if i feel like it, and make as much as i did when on a full-time salary. no bosses, no office politics, no 50 emails a day, no pointless meetings, no nattering on instant messaging, and no hours-long phonecalls with needy/remonstrative authors. feel like i've stepped into something of a socialist paradise, here.

could pretty easily make 2x as much as i did with a salary if i wanted to work full-time equivalent, but i'd rather go gawp at things on a beach and miscegenate with the locals. living abroad helps with this too, considering i'm invoicing about 5x the average national wage per hour.

you should look into it dilbert. another life is possible!

I'm working on it, need to get my robots working, make some more robots, will be nice if it works out.

Property development for the aged ps has been more profitable than the 9-5 and I've done both at the same time.
