You are being the worst friend. Dilbert never treated me this way.

I have more going on than you think. I just don't share it here because of cancel culture.

How much school work is too much? Should kids spend more time enjoying their youth or do we need to better educate kids through classwork and homework assignments?

the correct answer is 'a whole lot less than whatever the hell koreans are doing'.

cram school culture here is insane. students attend regular government school and then go pretty much directly to after-school cramschools or language schools (hagwons). they're studying for about 12 hours a day.

there's even bars and night-spots where they will have a projector in the venue that's showing math lessons/lectures. a bit tongue-in-cheek, but many koreans seriously go to these spots to, like, passively revise.

all to get into about 4-5 universities in the seoul area. if you don't make the cut, you're out! may as well work in a chicken shop for the rest of your life.

Recurring topic. I'll rehash what I've recently been promoting: little to no homework, infrequent testing, longer classes per subject, fewer subjects per day.

I'm skeptical of how useful homework and even testing is in getting kids to learn and commit things to long-term memory. I don't believe that test stuff a kid's spent breakfast cramming for is going to stay with them much past 3pm. If you have to cram like that, then maybe the class hasn't been very useful to you.

I think burnout is a fairly pressing issue (including teacher burnout). And studying for 12 hours a day, too much of a good thing maybe.

Mayor Bill de Blasio will overhaul New York City’s highly selective, racially segregated gifted and talented education classes, a sea change for the nation’s largest public school system that may amount to the mayor’s most significant act in the waning months of his tenure.

The elementary school gifted and talented program that New York has known for the last several decades will no longer exist for incoming kindergarten students next fall, and within a few years, it will be eliminated completely, city officials told The New York Times.

Students who are currently enrolled in gifted classes will become the final cohort in the existing system, which will be replaced by a program that offers accelerated learning to all students in the later years of elementary school.

The gradual elimination of the existing program will remove a major component of what many consider to be the city’s two-tiered education system, in which one relatively small, largely white and Asian American group of students gain access to the highest-performing schools, while many Black and Latino children remain in schools that are struggling.
Via NYT. Let me know if you want the whole article posted. There's a lot to unpack there but it is behind a paywall.

Collective punishment. Gifted kids paying for the sins of men in the 1920's. I expect many parents to yank their kids out of the public school and into private.

Maybe the source of merit could be investigated? Did the kids in these programs have all their basic needs met and live in more or less unbroken homes? Do the kids not enrolled trend to issues with these things?

Should there be public schools within miles or even blocks of "well-to-do" public schools that have to make do with a wildly lower budget on a per-student basis?

No amount of money will change the fact that there are tons of kids who don't want to be in school and have parents who don't care either.

Schools alone can't overhaul the country to address social problems. We can at the very least make sure the schools are supplied, staffed, sanitary, and that, considering the large chunk of their young lives spent living at these facilities, students are well fed while they're there. Breakfast if needed, lunch, and bathroom breaks without being sent to the principal's office because "doubt."

In loco parentis, schools can have a huge influence over students. Kids will pick up on a school barely scraping the underside of bare minimum, and aren't blind to the fact that their school has rooms that are off-limits because of structural issues while neighboring schools ritz it up.

Way more important I guess to sustain multiple conflicts and the billionaire space race.

I don't really consider bringing schools up to some sort of better standard is so much "throwing money away" like some people say, as it is equalizing districts and schools within districts. It still really bothers me that a public school in a poor area is poor, but one in a wealthy area is wealthy. Funding should not be tied to that so much. Lots of neglected buildings and schools that haven't been expanded or built onto for like the last 30 or so years, meanwhile the local population grows.

I'll reiterate my earlier statement that throwing money at schools isn't going to fix all social ills, but that school funding is, well, important for a lot of reasons already covered on this forum.

Like I said, I obviously have no opposition to more school funding.

But I am constantly thinking of this political/cultural impasse we are at. I don't expect to see some big change in the cultural makeup of the country that would result in more liberal policies.

I have seen a lot of school stabbings in my day (?!) but this is clearly the worst I have ever seen.

No context for that fight that I can see in the comments. Bringing a knife to school is pretty damning though, whether you're a bully or the one getting bullied. At least the teacher didn't get stabbed too.

imagine exerting potentially lethal force against a child.

why is america so uniquely violent? the culture is rinsed in it. every charged social scenario is immediately turned up to 11. the ante it always up. people are always ready to raise hands or pull a weapon. even schoolchildren aren’t spared in their innocence.

Since I do recognize that the US has problems with violence, I won't get offended (like you sometimes weirdly do for SK's sake, even though there is racism outside of your own experiences). But I will add though that less talked about are the times that people have nice days where they don't get shot and don't get into fights. Which for some of us is usually 365 days a year. Is there even a subreddit for that? Benign American Days. "Hey guys, back atcha with another video where I didn't get yelled at for an entire week!"

Stay tuned for these gripping webseries:
The People of Nordstroms
Standing In Line (episode 2: "line starts back here," "oh sorry, I didn't see it")
"How's Your Day?" "Pretty Good, Yours?"
Letting Someone Pull Out in Front of You
Shopping In Muslim Garb, but Nobody So Much as Blinked!

I could easily sit back and make sweeping posts about how everyone in the UK is getting stabbed and attacked by Muslim grooming gangs lIkE HoW I SeE iN tHe PaPeRs, but that would be silly.
