I was looking at cars and looked up top selling cars in the U.S.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g3200 … cars-2020/

Can you guess the top three highest selling cars in the U.S.? Also, why are F-150's so expensive? MSRP on a base model of one of those is $29,000. Yikes. It's actually more expensive than a STI and the Subaru looks less gay.

Pickup cancer has affected Australia now, half the people are driving sluggish lumbering monster trucks and crashing them a lot.

The roads and carparks just aren't big enough and they drive like shit at the best of times.

I "get" pickups and sports cars as desirable for various reasons and populations. I do not get crossovers and the crappy sorts of SUVs. I lament that sedans and coupes have been so much more on the downswing from manufacturers in recent years. That brief dip in gas prices and Obama-era push for efficiency almost had us going in a nice direction.

My pickup, ~20 years old, was like $5000-ish used. No lift kit, no coal rolling. It's been through the wringer with multiple office moves, hauling tools, supplies, and the occasional trailer pull. I like that I don't have to constantly be renting trucks for these reasons. I don't like people creeping on my canopy blind spots, or driving in cramped cities/towns and trying to parallel park there.

Personally, no reasons to drive a pickup, my next vehicle would not be one. I'd love to have a car on the side to but it's just more insurance and maintenance.

The '23 Ford F-150 electric starts at $70,000 …

Crossover SUV are something I like. One with AWD seems like a good investment when you live in places where snow can be an issue. I liked this Mitsu one when I worked there. AWD and high clearance.

My brother sent me a snap yesterday of a truck driving around here in OC. It had a sticker on the back and he didn't know what it was, but recognized the stylized S from the nazi SS. It ended up being a Hitler Youth sticker. Brazen, even for OC.

The problem is with half of people driving a stupid pickup you need to be near the same height as them to see past them, also you're les vulnerable when they hit you.

Mid-size crossovers make sense for a lot of people, more so than a full-size dildonator.

a mid size crossover with AWD and high clearance is almost 100% the next car I will get. It's super practical for myriad reasons.

You can tell people you're borrowing your wife's car while your truck is in the shop being modded.

Depending on the pickup ofc. They're not all outsized beasts or suburban queens that haven't so much as hauled a sack of cement. I think in a past thread I've posted some weights of cars surpassing light pickups. I've even seen some small trucks wrecked by collisions with cars.

If a truck (or any vehicle) is blocking your view to a point you're uncomfortable with, get off their ass. If you're in the next lane over, stop hanging out in their blind spot/corner. Either pass or back off.

A truck hugging the center line blocks a lot more view than a car. It hinders the ability to see for passing and if they hug the center line they are probably going slow in my area.
I always keep to the right side if someone comes up behind me fast so they can see. They have plenty of sight but even then they don't always pass, just stay 1second behind vOv

Ford Rangers and their ilk aren't the problems, but there is a point there. I drive a normal sedan and often have to creep dangerously forward in an intersection to turn right on red because my line of sight is blocked by some SUV that's pulled up too far and I can't see through over the hood. They're not the biggest problem for me on expressways (though still troublesome), but at least all the semis have gaps you can catch glimpses through.

My line of sight gets blocked by hedges, fence lines, and power poles. Creeping out to check for traffic is just a part of driving life for me when I can't avoid those spots.

With normal cars you don't have to do any of this.

It's kind of rude to tailgate or match speeds on someone's blind spot corner even if it's a car you're doing it to.

Its kind of rude to block a road or intersection with a huge truck.

In normal commuter traffic you can se 2-3-4 cars ahead through the cars so the risk of pileups is low, not when you're blocked by a behemoth who can't see you through his tailgate.

With some grades, a car creeping up past your side to make a turn in one direction while you're waiting for your turn in the other can block your view of oncoming traffic even if you're in a pickup. It's a reality of driving.

Also let me fix that for you:

Its kind of rude to block a road or intersection with a huge truck.

Normal size cars don't typically block people's view though, your argument is invalid.

"Maintain your stopping distances (timing is a neat method), don't overdrive conditions, and respect other drivers" is perfectly valid. Your complaints can be leveled at car drivers by motorcyclists. Maybe everybody should be on a motorcycle.

Motorcyclists can see through and over cars, not trucks, once again your argument is invalid.

Being able to see through a car to the next car and the next car is a nice to have which reduces accidents.

Mandating every car have a high level stop light has been negated by these stupid trucks.

Don't you take Indian taxis everywhere? Why do you have such a driver's vendetta. I mean I get it if a neighbor is rolling coal into your parents' driveway, kind of a dick move.

You can't see through all cars either. There's a thing called tinted windows, hangars, bulky hatchbacks, car seats. Some of them sit higher than others, and will block a low-slung car as effectively as any pickup. It doesn't take a very wide object to obstruct your view of what's coming.

Your argument actually calls for extreme lift kits on all pickups so people can see underneath them.

Anyway

My Subaru is coming up to 17, engine is getting a bit tired, thats the age I ditched my last two cars - one everything was shot, the second pretty much shot and I was emigrating.

I'd buy the same vehicle again, except its a smidgen small now and a four speed gearbox isn't enough.

My thinking is:

Might as well stick with Subaru, the dealership is nearby, in my opinion they have class leading ergonomics and dynamics, can't really be bothered looking much further. If I had to I'd start with Toyota.

A WRX would be nice, but they're a bit expensive use too much petrol, desirable to be stolen, impractical for daily driving and long distances.

An Outback would be nice too, but they're the 'premium' model so price is premium and so is servicing for no reason except they can. A Liberty is practically the same vehicle at 3/4 of the price.

An XV would make sense but the drivers field of view is stupidly flawed and its a stupid premium over the Impreza hatch for 50mm of extra height and ground clearance.

A Liberty would be OK, its one of the few sedans I don't mind, and compared with the Outback its good value. But if I'm buying a sedan why wouldn't I buy a Camry hybrid? Camry isn't AWD I guess.

Forester is too big and bulky and a bit tall but maybe I'd get used to it, why wouldn't I buy a Rav4 hybrid?

Impreza sedan and hatch - don't like the hatch, flawed field of view, sedan is not bad but won't take a tow-bar which is stupid so I can't tow a trailer so I'd need a hatch.

I'm leaning to the Liberty or maybe a used Outback if I had to buy something tomorrow, maybe my Forester will soldier on a few more years and it'll all be different then.
