Any plans to enter a PhD program in the near to midterm? Would you apply from Korea or take a breather between the two?

i'm honestly hoping the next year will help me figure it out. disruption to routine and rhythm, sort of thing.

i have enough money saved from this last year's endless lockdown/bf2s shitposting to do another 1-year masters, which i'm half-considering at this point.

i'm basically taking a breather from korea onwards, working freelance rather than salaried/permanent contract. hoping to have enough time almost immediately after getting out there to write, think, research, etc.

i feel like half the posters here could probably do a PhD at this point just from their D&ST careers alone.

Well I certainly could, you should have no trouble - need to start constructing some rational arguments though.

Rearranged all of my non-fiction books on one shelf by theme. +1 if you can guess at least a little of how I organized it.

I only looked for about 5 seconds, but at first glance is it chronological by subject matter, roughly?

Yup. Top shelf is European history put in chronological order. Bottom left is philosophy, biographies, essays, and political pieces. Bottom right is religion/middle eastern history.

Sometimes it's nice not having to share your bookshelf with other book people so you can categorize it the way you want. Such a relief not being strictly by author, man.

staff at the new yorker unionized.

it's kind of grim to see an august and respected publication air its dirty laundry like this. but fairly indicative. anyone would think that working for an internationally respected condé-nast publication would be the apex of a career. the industry is fucked.

I pay I think $150/year for a subscription.

They had a really good article the other day exploring why covid deaths in the global south are exponentially lower than in highly developed countries. Good read.

they make a tonne of money. the main magazine editor (now david remnick) makes about $2 million a year.

with the top magazines and publishing houses it all comes down to 'you can't eat prestige'.

Is there a way to find out if there's going to be a print version in english?

I don't really want to read it in french, it makes me feel dirty.

I suppose I could read it on my PC...

The Useless Man concludes with a series of carefully reasoned recommendations concerning nature and climate, globalization, and finance, all evaluating potential public policies by how effectively they stand to stem the growth of uselessness. A lucid assessment of our current geopolitical situation and a stirring forecast of what will happen if we fail to act quickly and collaboratively on a global scale,
The solution is the colonization of vast expanses of Eurasia. I read such an idea in a book titled "my struggle".

What is the niche magazine publishing industry like?

In my mail box today there were 3 magazines. 1 was a free one my union gives me. 2 were some health related one that I wouldn't be surprised was paid for by my insurance or primary physician office since I wouldn't sign up for such a thing. I also occasionally get a magazine from both of the colleges I graduated from. A Corvette enthusiast part magazine also comes and so does a home surveillance equipment magazine. Never signed up for those either but my dad bought stuff from those places and they send glossy color magazines now.

None of these things ever get read. But they make me wonder what magazine publishing is like. Are magazines going through the same issues that newspapers are? Do niche trade and "institution" (college, union) magazines hold up the magazine industry? And isn't it expensive to make these? I know my union pays for mine with our union dues, the university pays for it with tuition, and whoever is sending me wellness magazines got healthcare industry money backing them. But it must cost a lot to still go through all this trouble for something that goes straight into the trash. And should I ever bother to read these? I assume it's all corporate propaganda with ads in between articles written by a enthusiastic nobody in some field who will frame their article for their grandkids to see.

therein is the problem with goodreads and a lot of that amateur, self-publishing ecology. critics might be assholes but at least they're professional. any dickhead can leave a bad review on amazon ('delivery was 1 day late, 2 stars') or goodreads and, as per the algorithm and rankings system, torpedo your last 2 years of writing work.

Whoopsie. Don't buy pre-released books without knowing what you're doing. That's my mistake.
I think a few months ago Amazon waited until I was drunk then advertised it to me. Oh well, if the money went to his estate I'm not too torn up. Then again, most of the money probably went to Amazon and I'm trying to ween off them for all purchases. Fuck Amazon.

Did you ever read Bourdain's first book? It's actually how he became famous.

Has anyone here ever read 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' by Lawrence of Arabia? Amazing movie by the way.

Scenes like this were done with real actors.
