In the specific case of poetry I have long ago accepted the designation of my person in this arena as one of a total philistine. Old news.uziq wrote:
you mean it has artifice? conceit? er, that describes all art, in that case. to use the pejorative sense 'pretentious' is the height of philistinism. a piece of text without any pretence isn't art: it's a fucking instruction manual. it's a road sign. it's a warning sticker.
you are a very silly little boy. go and stand in the corner and think about what you're saying.

I took out my copy of The Rise and Fall of Third Reichi to own some cucks in the World War 2 thread. It is a hardcover version. I don't like hardcover books because I hate dust jackets. Can I just throw away the Dust Jacket?
yep, you can.
Laminate it then tape it on like they do with library books.SuperJail Warden wrote:

Anyone ever read Night by Elie Wiesel? It's about a Jewish boy's experience during the Holocaust. I think every high school student should have to read it before graduating.
you must read everything by primo levi.
after that, i introduce you to the real intellectual top-table: levinas.

the follow-up, Daycare Closed, is a real doorstop.
Daycare Closed may have been overshadowed by chairing the Federal Reserve with longtime Rand associate and objectivist Greenspan.
I'm waiting for the finale - Atlas could have shrugged but in fact never did, instead stayed where he was and griped endlessly about paying too much tax
Fuck Israel
anyone here read much Saul Bellow? i think a lot of you would like it. macbeth especially.
I will save you the paragraph facebook got but in short I own this book published in 1908 now.
What is the oldest book you own?

I've got a really old, elaborate, and gigantic family bible sitting in a protective cover somewhere that probably out-ages everything else in my library. Apart from that, a good number of books from the mid-1900s thanks to a lot of bibliophile hand-me-downs. I could probably get a good price on my old Hobbit/LOTR box set at the Tolkien Library Store, but they're missing their dust jackets (if they've ever had any) and I'd kind of feel bad about losing them.
Is it a real Bible or a Mormon bible?
King James, same as the Mormons use. Also Pentecostals, Baptists, Episcopalians, etc. Seems unlikely with family history that it's LDS print.
Getting the binding restored at some point has been a backburner item for awhile.

I'm admittedly not too well researched on Mormonism though I like most of what I know. The Book of Mormon is separate from the bible LDS uses? I assumed it was just added to the last page of whatever bible Joseph Smith used.
So there's like four books (holy bible included). The other three are Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price.
From their website:
I'm certainly not an expert. Mostly, "Sunday School" there at that point was the regular old bible.
From their website:
The Book of Mormon is another witness of Jesus Christ and confirms the truths found in the Holy Bible. Far from undermining the Bible, the Book of Mormon supports its testimony of Jesus Christ. One passage says that the Book of Mormon “shall establish the truth” of the Bible “and shall make known to all kindreds, tongues, and people, that the Lamb of God is the Son of the Eternal Father, and the Savior of the world; and that all men must come unto him, or they cannot be saved” (1 Nephi 13:40).
The Doctrine and Covenants is a book of scripture containing revelations from the Lord to the Prophet Joseph Smith and to a few other latter-day prophets. It is unique in scripture because it is not a translation of ancient documents.
Personally, I haven't been "active" since I was a kid, and don't intend on going back. It's not something I identify with. One of the volumes of scripture included in the standard works of the Church. The Pearl of Great Price includes extracts from Joseph Smith’s Translation (inspired version) of the Bible as well as a translation of some Egyptian papyri containing the writings of the prophet Abraham, excerpts from Joseph Smith’s testimony and history, and the Articles of Faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Well that was informative. Thank you for teaching me about this. And now I know.
One for the catholic church:
I winced when it said you can trust a police officer. Just make sure you don't approach one with a Megatron in your hands.
You're probably not safe with Optimus Prime either.
