Oh I agree, I believe much of global warming can be addressed by shortening supply chains. However I think most of the food imports here consists of grains, corns and other crops rather than meats. Europe being relatively small to its population number there's not an excess of arable land.
I don't know all the details of import regulations wrt foodstuffs but I imagine these mostly intend to stop unsafe imports or excesses in other countries (child labour and such). Have no idea though. Just know that south american or american meats comprise a small number of what's consumed here. Also that we're not a fan of chlorinated chicken and such, which Trump is now trying to push on the UK cause of brexit.
