streaming is like the ass cancer of gaming. i still think the move to streaming platforms changed gaming fundamentally from self-organised fun, amateur leagues/ladders, ‘clans’, forum player communities like this one, etc. towards everyone defining themselves as fucking chat-room tippers and fanboys. it’s pathetic. as if watching television wasn’t a waste of fucking time, now you have to watch some maladjusted manchild play a fucking computer game. wow.

dumbest shit ever especially now when you consider that game designers and studios are pandering to the influence these morons have. i do not want games designed to be ‘spectator friendly’. give me a fucking solid game! and these cretins are going to ruin vintage gaming experiences like the relaunch of classic WoW by tipping server populations with their asperger’s-zerg followings. great.

Totally agree. Not gonna cut my nose off to spite my face though, still a great way to learn about games without playing them, and have entertainment value still. Small streams are way better. I don't watch shroud.

I used to watch a few gaming YouTubers circa 2012, and it seems they've all mostly moved to Twitch for the money. Daily 8-hour streams full of acknowledgments to the chat is god-awful content compared to a tightly edited 15-20 minute video. I don't know who the fuck these donators are either, with their "sorry it's so little, I had use the rest to pay rent, notice me senpai" messages.

the whole move to make gaming a spectator sport is corporate money-driven bullshit anyway. as soon as they realised a game could be better monetised through passive spectatorship on a massive scale, rather than shifting individual units/subscriptions, the whole industry changed. isn't half the cs:go store fucking stupid team pennants and banners and whatever? or a ticket office to watch pay-per-view pro tournaments? fuck all that. i never needed more than a 340p, 10-minute frag video to get me hyped back in the day and willing to be better, compete more, etc. i still remember recording my own match demos in the quake engine on call of duty 1/2 and then re-watching my own plays to improve my game.

Yeah I'm fed up of cosmetics and stat tracking guns. It's the same shit in every game. I quit pubg when they gave up on making the game work in favour for cosmetics. I blame TF2. Check out Escape from Tarkov though, they're still using the old business model... Kinda. It's an early access title is the only thing, but it's one time payment, no micro transactions.

I try to look for streamers that don't shout out alerts in the middle of the game but wait till they're back at the menus, that's the best you can ask of them really. Smoke is a good example of this in EFT.

i haven't played any video games in over a year. It's sad to reflect on, because I used to get so much enjoyment out of video games, but I don't miss it at all.

I watched someone playing Escape from Tarkov and it looked interesting. The tiered purchase model gave me pause, though, as did whatever drama they had with the devs a while back.

the only difference in the tiered purchase model is starting equipment (which is really a non-issue, the extra you get is really not a massive advantage), and a larger protector case (if you die in raid, you only keep whatever's in your protector case). Base game gets an Alpha container, 2x2, as you spend more your case gets bigger, up to 3x3. Whilst it is technically an advantage, it's really not huge, and you can buy a protector case with ingame currency that is 2x4.

It's more touted as a way to further support the devs if you wish to. It's not a necessity to be competitive.

Their copyright striking shit was shady as fuck though.

ironically tf2 was literally about as perfect as team/role-based shooters ever got during its early days. it was in development for like a decade. 'vanilla' tf2 before the big content packs/hat simulator stuff was an incredibly lean, well-balanced, deeply thought out game. it was amazing. i think it was the last truly great FPS game for PC. i'll look up EfT.

I liked some of the new ideas that Battlefield V had and almost bought the game until I watched a little gameplay on YouTube. The in game loot crates looked awful and I remembered that damn progression system I hated.

I was kinda joking, I don't really blame TF2 I'm sure you could track cosmetics back further, just trying to rile you up a bit lol, but have you seen the state of that game recently? It was great when it came out, and it was great when every character got their first alternate weapons, but then valve just went fucking mental with the speed they added shit, felt like a different game each day almost, could never keep up with all the weapons and how they worked so you were always at a strategical disadvantage. EFT is almost better to watch than to play. Performance is garbage even on a top of the line PC.

i have to be honest, ‘the game is better to watch than play’ isn’t the best advertisement i’ve ever read.

I'm not gonna recommend you play it. You'll not enjoy it. I was saying it's a reason to watch twitch, for me at least.

actually, maybe you will enjoy it, once it's finished. I see it kinda as distilled DayZ. action:walking simulator ratio is way better. but you'd rage at how unfinished and buggy it is right now.

you mean the overarching idea of the game? or you think it would just be better without other human players?

Amazon Prime, but thinking about cancelling.

Tired of receiving damaged books and discs in the mail, so might order exclusively with B&N or Best Buy and pick them up in-store. The shows are alright, but I could miss them pretty easily. Lots of other stuff in my "wish list" is so much riffraff.

Will probably pick up NYT digi on the cheap. $1/wk isn't that shabby, and some of the articles can overrun a lunch.

For me, it depends. My best gaming days were spent on the NES as a kid. Some titles were single player, and my friends and I took turns on it. You just learned how to spectate. Watching a streamer (who hasn't developed a kid's TV show persona) is almost like a quick fix of that.

Some games lend themselves to streaming without trying. With Mario Maker, you can get your schadenfreude quota filled by watching someone suffer through your obnoxiously trollish creation. Sometimes you might bump into a broadcast from someone you used to game with, and reconnect that way. Sometimes you get to watch an temporary prerelease key in action, or watch a bit of actual gaming footage from an early access releass. Someone playing AoE2 on Voobly or trying out Brutal Doom for the first time can trigger a bit of nostalgia.

Sometimes it's just something to run in the background at times where I can't get invested in a match, but I'd rather listen to Ross Scott spend an hour breaking down some obscure title from 1997 if there's a new video out.

I've never bought into the follower culture though. The idea that people almost come to blows over youtubers and twitch streamers still seems like such an alien concept to me. I don't even remember kids doing that "back in the day" when it came to action stars (not that fights weren't started for asinine reasons). Also, streams with constant interruptions to acknowledge donors, or content is specifically geared to secure viewers and nothing else: not for me.

It should be worth pointing out here that if you already have an Amazon Prime account, you can use that to power Twitch Prime and free games, keys for in-game items, and one free month "subscription" each month you can toss someone's way.
