No they won't. They'll see how well you manage without any help to do the job of two guys. Should've done a shittier job there mate. Now they won't hire the new guy to assist you.
Its 2016, do I really need to tell a customer that you no longer have to courier CDs across town, you can send files by email and that zipping files often makes them small enough to do so?
Fuck Israel
we still get authors turn up to deliver manuscripts as 500-page printouts... it's like, dude, i am not scanning and sending this to the typesetter. email me your word doc.
Anyone ever bring in anything handwritten?uziq wrote:

Reminds me of Hillary Clinton's email server. When the state department asked for the emails still on the server, she had 55,000 pages printed out and delivered.
older authors do all sorts of weird shit. handwritten indexes/appendices, giving us 'photos' that are basically those 25 pixel square google image thumbnails, etc. you just can't explain to a certain sort of person that, hey, this isn't going to blow-up to a 300CPI resolution print-worthy image. and no, i am not going to key in your manuscript to a word processor. that would take me 40 hours.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

btw dilbert it's a WeTransfer kinda world for big files, not a zip archive.
One of my submissions last year
"Ah, you miserable creatures! You who think that you are so great! You who judge humanity to be so small! You who wish to reform everything! Why don't you reform yourselves? That task would be sufficient enough."

You guys still do stuff on paper? Wow.
Fuck Israel
Really? I thought those were Tom Clancy manuscripts.
Srsly though, there's a fair bit of old school practice in construction sort of work. No shame in it. I don't think I've ever seen anyone carry around a poster-sized tablet to scribble notes on, much less roll one up and toss it onto their back seat. If they had one, I doubt they'd want to expose it to the elements.
Plus you get to sit in an office that looks like Gandalf's library if you're so inclined.

Those are submission docs though, I haven't worked anywhere which used paper drawings in 20 years.

Everything is paper in NYC. When, at the start of construction, I ask for electronic shop drawings from the contractor rather than paper, they both look at me like I have three heads and thank me.Dilbert_X wrote:

No wonder why cranes are always collapsing in NYC. They don't have ipads.

we FTP our actual business stuff. getting an author with a tendentious grasp of technology to send us a 100Mb of MSS? wetransfer or dropbox.
We use shared remote drives and FTP almost exclusively. I don't think I can send more than maybe 15 megs in an email, and until we moved to office 365 almost a year ago, I'd have to archive my emails every 2 weeks.
oh fuck you i just wrote a whole thing out and the site crashed and it didnt post
my boss got fired and a bunch of people in my department quit so now i'm basically the only guy with good knowledge left in my department
without being too much of an ego maniac, pretty much everyone at the company thinks i'm great (and they're right)
the execs are bending over backwards trying to get me to stay, they just gave me a pay rise and a roadtrip around the US but I think i can leverage my position a little more here
has anyone been in a similar situation?
